Baseball Drops Rubber Match, 7-1, At VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped the rubber match on Saturday afternoon to VCU, 7-1, at The Diamond.
The Minutemen fall to 8-14 on the year, including 1-2 in the Atlantic 10, while VCU improves to 18-10 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Jack Beverly and Jake Given tallied two hits each to lead the team, while Kevin Skagerlind, Austin Burgess, Matt Travisano and Nolan Tichy had one hit apiece, including a solo homer from Tichy, marking his third of the season. Tichy scored the lone run for Massachusetts.
VCU got on the board in the opening frame with an RBI single to take the 1-0 lead. In the third, Massachusetts tied up the game at one apiece. Tichy led off the inning with a solo home run over the left center field wall, marking his third long ball of the season.
The Rams scored two more runs in the fourth to reclaim the lead at 3-1, before tallying four more in the seventh to make it a 7-1 game. UMass put runners on first and second with two outs in the ninth, but were unable to rally, as VCU came away with the 7-1 win.
Robbie O'Connor (1-4) had the loss for UMass, giving up three runs on five hits, with a walk and a season-high matching five strikeouts in four innings of work. Brian Curley (5-0) received the winning decision, allowing only three hits, two walks and striking out six in 4.1 innings.
