Massachusetts Baseball Upsets #13 Virginia, 10-5

March 02, 2024 | Baseball

The Minutemen earn its first win over a ranked opponent since at least 2003.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – University of Massachusetts baseball topped No. 13 Virginia, 10-5, at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park on Saturday afternoon to even up the series at one game each. The win over the ranked opponent marked the first for the program since at least 2003.

The Minutemen improved to 2-4 on the season, while the Cavaliers took its first loss of the season, moving to 9-1 on the year.

Matt Travisano and Michael Toth led the team with four hits apiece, with Toth registering a double. Five other members recorded a hit on the day to aid the team to a season-high 13 hits, including Carter Hanson's second home run of the season. Kevin Skagerlind tallied a team-best three RBI, followed by Hanson and Toth with two each, as the Minutemen totaled a season-best nine RBI on the afternoon. Travisano, Jack Beverly and Toth contributed two runs apiece, as Kyle Hoog, Sam Hill, Hanson and Braden Sullivan all came across the plate once.

With two outs in the first frame and Hoog on second, Hanson crushed the ball to right center field for a two-run homer to give UMass an early 2-0 lead. Massachusetts added to its total in the second inning, as Beverly started the team off with a single. Toth doubled down the right field line, positioning Beverly at third. A ground out sacrifice bunt by Sullivan allowed Beverly to score, before Skagerlind grounded out, to the shortstop with Toth heading home to make it a 4-0 contest.

The Minutemen secured two more runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 6-0. Beverly reached first base on a fielding error, before Toth was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. A fielder's choice helped Sullivan sit on first and Toth at second, and a single from Skagerlind down the right field line pushed both Toth and Sullivan across the dish.

Virginia notched a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth, making it a 6-3 game, but UMass took a run back in the top of the eighth as Travisano scored on a single to left field by Toth. In the bottom of the eighth, the Cavaliers added to their total on a RBI single, bringing the game to a score of 7-4.

The top of the ninth saw three more runs by Massachusetts, as Mike Gervasi started off with a walk, with Hill coming in to pinch run. A sacrifice bunt by Hanson moved Hill to second, while a single by Travisano helped Hill touch home plate to make it 8-4. With two outs, Beverly reached second on a dropped fly ball by Virginia's center fielder with Travisano heading home, adding to the Minutemen's total. A RBI single from Toth scored Beverly as UMass capped its scoring at 10.

The Cavaliers tacked on one more run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Minutemen were able to close it out with a 10-5 victory.

Sam Belliveau (1-1) collected the win for Massachusetts, tossing five complete innings, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks. Mikey Jensen came into the game for 1.2 innings, walking one batter, while Zack Given earned the second save of his career, giving up two runs, four hits, a walk and dealing the only strikeout of the day for UMass in 2.1 innings.

Jack O'Connor (0-1) had the loss for Virginia, allowing six runs on as many hits, walking one and striking out five in 3.2 innings pitched. The Cavaliers rotated through seven pitchers on the afternoon.
