Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball continues its road stint with a trip to Charlottesville, Virginia, for a three-game series against No. 13 Virginia at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park. The Minutemen and Cavaliers square off on Friday, March 1 through Sunday, March 3.

The weekend matchup will be streamed on ESPN+/ACCNX, beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. The first pitch on both Saturday and Sunday is slated for 1 p.m.

UMass holds an 1-3 overall record on the season, while Virginia is 8-0 on the year, including a 5-0 home mark.

Recap in a Minute
Massachusetts faced Bucknell last weekend at a neutral site in Colonial Heights, Virginia, at Shepherd Stadium. The Bison claimed the four-game series, 3-1, as the Minutemen secured an 8-6 win in game two of last Sunday's doubleheader.

In the seven-inning contest, Nolan Tichy helped UMass lead early, 2-0, with a two-run home run, before the Minutemen added another in the top of the fifth. Bucknell came back within one with two runs scored in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Mike Gervasi hit his second long ball of the season, and first grand slam of his career. Tichy touched the dish once more to make it an 8-2 lead, but a three-run homer in the seventh, plus one more run brought the Bison's total up to six. UMass was able to hold on, though, for the 8-6 victory in the final game of the series.

All-Time vs. Virginia
The Minutemen and Cavaliers will meet for the second time in program history, and first time in 53 years. Virginia leads the series, 1-0, with the only meeting between the two teams occurring on March 25, 1971. The Cavaliers went on to win 7-4 on the day.

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2024 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 141st season. Nineteen members of the team are back from the 2023 campaign, while 16 players join for their first season in Amherst, including eight freshman and eight transfers.

Commonwealth Connections
Graduate student Jacob Terwilliger and Virginia sophomore Ryan Osinski spent time in the bullpen at Bucknell together during the 2023 season.

Keeping it in the Family
The 2024 season marks the 58th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Seventh-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.

On Deck
Massachusetts continues on the road with a three-game series at Elon in Elon, North Carolina, on Friday, March 8 through Sunday, March 10. The Minutemen and Phoenix match up on Friday and Saturday at 4 p.m., before taking the field at 1 p.m. on Sunday. All three games will be streamed on FloBaseball.
