Massachusetts Falls To Citadel, 12-7, In Series Finale

Beverly and Tichy recorded home runs in the loss.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell to the Citadel, 12-7, on Sunday afternoon at the Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
 
UMass moved to 3-11 overall, while Citadel improves to 14-5 on the season.
 
Matt Travisano led the team with three hits and three runs, while Jack Beverly followed with two hits, including his third home run of the year, two runs and a team-high three RBI. Nolan Tichy and Carter Hanson contributed a hit, with Tichy adding a run and a RBI, and Hanson tallying two RBI. Tichy's lone hit marked his second homer of the season.
 
UMass took a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning. With Austin Burgess on first base, Travisano hit a single that place Burgess on third. Beverly recorded his second home run of the series, and third of the season, on the first pitch, to make it a 3-0 lead. A two-out solo homer for Tichy aided the Minutemen to its 4-0 lead. Citadel came back within one, tallying three runs in the third, before tying up the contest at 4-4 in the fourth frame.
 
Massachusetts reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth. With Travisano standing on second and Beverly on first, Tichy loaded up the bases after being hit by a pitch. Hanson stepped up to the plate and singled through the right side, pushing Travisano and Beverly across the dish to regain a 6-4 lead. In the bottom of the inning, a fielding error and a three-run homer helped the Bulldogs to an 8-6 lead.
 
Four more runs for Citadel in the eighth inning for the lead, before the Minutemen added on more run in the top of the ninth as Travisano scored on a throwing error, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs won 12-7.
 
Robbie O'Connor (0-3) took the loss for Massachusetts, going five complete innings and allowing eight runs on six hits, two walks, and striking out a career-best five.
 
Massachusetts continues on the road with two midweek contests. The Minutemen visit Norfolk State on Tuesday, March 19, at 3 p.m. in Norfolk, Virginia, before taking on UMES on Wednesday, March 20, at 3 p.m. in Princess Anne, Maryland.
