Haddad, Bell Medal On Day Three Of A-10 Swim And Dive Championships

Five school records broken by Massachusetts on day three of competition.

HAMPTON, Va. – Senior Sam Haddad claimed the bronze medal in the men's 400 individual medley, while sophomore Andrew Bell grabs the gold medal in the men's three-meter as the University of Massachusetts swimming and diving team finished day three of the Atlantic 10 Championships at the Hampton Aquaplex. Additionally, Massachusetts saw five school records fall during the day.
 
The Minutewomen sit in seventh place, while the Minutemen are in third after the third day of competition. Day four of the A-10 Championships will begin on Saturday, February 24, at 10 a.m.
 
Haddad touched the wall first in the 400 individual medley with a personal-best time of 3:49.90 in the champion finals to finish third in the event. Bell had a six-dive total of 406.95 in three-meter dive to sit atop the podium.
 
In addition to Haddad's school record in the 400 individual medley, senior Freddie Borg swam a personal-best 54.64 to break teammate Jack Artis' previous record of 54.68 in the 100 breaststroke. The men's 400 medley relay team of junior Beau Bengston, Borg, junior Grant Beebe and sophomore Sammy Quigg broke the school record with a time of 3:15.71, breaking the previous record of 3:17.88.
 
For the Minutewomen, senior Megan Mitchell broke her previous record of 54.55 in the 100 backstroke with a personal-best time of 54.44 in individual events, before the 400 medley relay team of Mitchell, senior Maggie Desmond, fifth-year student Summer Pierce and senior Caroline Mahoney earned the new school record time of 3:42.33, beating a previous time from earlier this season of 3:43.71.
 
Women's Swimming & Diving
Pierce kicked off the finals with a seventh-place finish in the 100 butterfly, swimming a time of 54.40, before freshman Olga Stoura recorded a personal-best time to move into sixth all-time in the record books in the consolation final of the 200 freestyle. Junior Anna Kwon swam a personal-best in the consolation of the 200 freestyle (1:51.09) to place ninth all-time in school history.
 
Desmond finished the 100 breaststroke champion finals in seventh-place with a time of 1:02.61, marking a personal-best to be second all-time. Freshman Lindsay Burbage had a personal-best time of 1:03.25 in the consolation final to place seventh-all time in the records. Mitchell earned seventh in the 100 backstroke with her school record time of 54.44 in the champions final, while senior Bri Williams completed the consolation final of the event with a personal-best time of 55.13, placing second in school history.
 
Mitchell, Desmond, Pierce and Mahoney took sixth place with their school record time of 3:42.33 in the 400 medley relay.  
 
Men's Swimming & Diving
Beebe started off the Minutemen in the 100 butterfly consolation finals, recording a lifetime-best time of 48.95 to claim sixth all-time in the record books. Haddad claimed third in the 400 individual medley with his school record time of 3:49.90 in the champions final, as senior Wilson Dubois finished the event in seventh-place, swimming a personal-best time of 3:56.46, which moved him to fifth all-time in school history.
 
Graduate student Emerson Kiefer was seventh in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:38.24 in the champions finals, while Quigg swam a personal-best time of 1:37.85 to become the sixth-fastest in school history, in the consolation finals. Borg earned sixth place in the 100 breaststroke with his school record time of 54.64, while Artis followed in eighth-place with a time of 55.12.
 
Bengston concluded the individual events in the consolation finals of the 100 backstroke, recording a personal-best time of 49.22 to place sixth all-time in the record books.
 
Bengston, Borg, Beebe and Quigg placed seventh in the 400 medley relay, combining for a school record time of 3:15.71.
 
On the Boards
Bell took home his second gold medal of the A-10 Championships with a score of 406.95, while graduate student Tommy Cotner claimed sixth with a six-dive total of 321.30.
