Women's Basketball Falls to Army 56-50

Allie Palmieri posted a career-high 21 points, while Lily Ferguson came down with a career-best 13 rebounds.

AMHERST, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts women's basketball (2-4, 0-0 A-10) dropped a 56-50 decision against Army West Point (6-1, 0-0 Patriot League) on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center.

Allie Palmieri led the team with a career-best 21 points, knocking down four-of-eight from beyond the arc, including the opening three for the Minutewomen. Lilly Ferguson crashed the boards hard, coming down with a career-high 13 rebounds.

Yahmani McKayle and Megan Olbrys combined for 18 points on the day. Olbrys grabbed seven rebounds and McKayle added a block and a steal.

  • The Minutewomen followed up with a fast break shot from Palmieri and free throws by Megan Olbrys, cutting their deficit to three.
  • The Black Knights closed out the third quarter with back-to-back jumpers, forcing Massachusetts to enter the final quarter of play down 42-34.
  • Kulesza opened the fourth quarter strongly by draining a mid-range jumper at 9:38.
  • Army quickly responded with two made shots, extending their lead to double digits.
  • Free throws and a second-chance layup from McKayle and Olbrys respectively made the game 50-42 with 2:39 to go.
  • Palmieri then sniped a three-pointer, making it a five point game.
  • After both teams traded free throws, Palmieri hit another three, cutting the UMass deficit to two with 19 seconds left.
  • Despite the Minutewomen's efforts, free throws from Army put the game to rest. Final score: 56-50 Black Knights.
