Hughes Breaks Program Goals Record as Minutemen Win Fourth Straight

November 02, 2024 | Men's Soccer

Alec Hughes scores his 48th and 49th career goals as Minutemen claim first 10+ win season since 2017.

AMHERST, Mass. – Massachusetts (10-3-4, 5-2-1 A10) closed out the regular season on the right note, firing on all cylinders to cruise to a 5-1 victory over St. Bonaventure (6-8-3, 2-4-2 A10) on the road.

Alec Hughes made Massachusetts history, notching his 48th and 49th career goals to pass Jeff Deren ('03) in the All-Time record books. Four different Minutemen found net on Saturday as the high-octane offense led UMass to its first 10+ win regular season since 2017.

Breaking Down the Action
  • Massachusetts wasted no time on the offensive end, netting its first goal of the day in the 4th minute when Kyle Stenzel scored his first of the season from a corner kick setup by Johan Feilscher.
  • Mattia Ferretti attempted to answer for the Bonnies, as Alex Geczy made his first save of the day to keep the home team scoreless.
  • Shortly after, Aidan Kelly doubled the Minutemen's lead in the 8th minute after a broken-up aerial found him in front of an empty net.
  • UMass would surrender its only goal of the day via an own goal in the 26th minute, as a St. Bonaventure corner kick was deflected into the Minutemen's net.
  • Alec Hughes would extend his scoring streak to three games in the second half, scoring his 13th goal of the season after rebounding his own shot into the center of the goal.
  • Less than five minutes would pass before the Minutemen struck again, as Oliver Akintade played Andrew Ortiz through for his fourth goal of the season in the 58th minute.
  • Massachusetts would turn defense into offense, as a long ball setup Hughes on a 1-on-1 counterattack. The graduate forward beat the last line of defense off the dribble to score a left-footed goal for the 5-1 lead and Massachusetts All-Time goals record.
  • Geczy finished the evening with three saves, as the UMass defense closed out the last contest of the regular season in dominating fashion.
