A-10 Quarterfinal Goes to Shootout Finish as #3 UMass Falls to #6 SLU

AMHERST, Mass. – Massachusetts (10-3-5, 5-2-2 A10) fought to the bitter end in its Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship Quarterfinal, drawing Saint Louis (7-3-8, 5-1-3 A10) after extra time falling just short 3-0 in a penalty kick shootout.

Senior goalkeeper Alex Geczy recorded his eighth clean sheet of the year, holding the Billikens scoreless throughout 110 minutes. Geczy's diving save in the 105^th minute on what would've been a sure-fire goal forced the game into penalty kicks.

It was a battle between defensive powerhouses throughout the entirety of the day, with both teams combining for just three shots on goal. Matt Cence led the Minutemen with three shots, registering the only shot on goal for UMass.

The Minutemen found a pair of high-quality scoring chances off of corners, but headers from Aidan Kelly and Ivan Vrh missed wide as neither side was able to pull ahead.

Massachusetts awaits their NCAA College Cup fate with the NCAA DI Men's Soccer Championship selection show taking place on Monday, Nov. 18 prior to the first round of competition. 22 conference champions qualify automatically, while the balance of the field is selected at large by the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Committee. The teams will be seeded so that 16 of the 48 teams will receive a First-Round bye and automatically advance to the Second Round.
