Women’s Soccer Draws VCU, 2-2, In Regular Season Finale

Grace Pinkus scores the equalizer on a penalty kick to help the Minutewomen split the point.
RICHMOND, Va. – A late penalty kick goal from graduate student forward Grace Pinkus aided the University of Massachusetts women's soccer team to a 2-2 draw at VCU at Sports Backers Stadium in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon.
The tie gives Massachusetts home field advantage for the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals for the second straight year.
The Minutewomen finish the regular season with an 11-4-3 overall record and 6-2-2 mark in the A-10, while the Rams moved to 4-8-5 on the year, including a 2-3-4 record in the league.
VCU found the back of the net first in the first half, as Makaya Parham headed the ball in the bottom left of the goal in the 39th minute. The Rams held on to a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Senior forward Ashley Lamond scored the equalizer in the second half of the match to make it a 1-1 contest. Graduate student midfielder Ella Curry took the corner kick for the Minutewomen, sending the ball towards the box. As the ball bounced in empty space, graduate student defender Hannah Peric was able to get a touch to send it back. Lamond was able to get her left foot on the ball, booting it to the bottom left of the net at the 52:50 mark to score her fifth of the season.
The Rams were able to reclaim the lead late in the second half with a goal from VCU's Jenna Eller in the 79th minute. At the 87:13 mark, Pinkus was awarded a penalty kick after being taken down in the box. Pinkus kicked the ball to the left side of the VCU goalkeeper to capitalize on the opportunity, notching her second of the year, to help the Minutewomen split the point with the Rams as the contest ended in a 2-2 draw.
Massachusetts edged out VCU in shots, 10-8, while placing five on goal to the Rams' two. The two programs completed the game even in corner kicks with four each.
Lamond led UMass in shots with three, as senior midfielder Bella Recinos followed close behind with two. Recinos placed both her shots on goal with Lamond putting her goal on target.
Redshirt senior Bella Mendoza played the full 90 minutes in net for UMass, allowing two goals with no saves. Allison Karpovich of VCU made three stops and let in two goals in 90 minutes of play.
Massachusetts gears up for the Atlantic 10 Championship, with the quarterfinals round beginning on Friday, November 1 or Saturday, November 2, at the on-campus locations of the top four teams in the final standings. The semifinals are set for Wednesday, November 6, with the finals on Sunday, November 10 with both rounds being held on the on-campus location of the higher seed.
