Minutewomen pick up huge road win as A-10 regular season winds down.
CHICAGO – Senior midfielder Bella Recinos netted a first half goal and sophomore forward Caroline Dickson added a second half goal as the University of Massachusetts women's soccer team pitched a 2-0 shutout over Loyola Chicago at Loyola Soccer Park on Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Massachusetts defense dominated as the Minutewomen held the Ramblers to only four shots in the game with none on target. The win for UMass marked the first loss at home and in the Atlantic 10 Conference for Loyola Chicago.
The Minutewomen improve to 10-4-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the A-10, while the Ramblers moved to 8-3-5 on the year, including 3-1-4 in the league.
Recinos put the Minutewomen on the board first with her ninth goal of the season at the 28:25 mark. Graduate student forward Grace Pinkus passed the ball into the box in front of the goal, as Recinos chased the ball down. Recinos got a left foot on the ball and kicked it towards the bottom left of the net over Loyola Chicago's goalkeeper Allison Deardroff as she came out to try to make the save.
UMass' defense stood strong in the final 45 minutes, allowing two shots for the Ramblers. In the 87th minute, Dickson sent the ball up between two defenders to create a breakaway. Dickson booted the ball from the edge of the 18-yard box, sailing it past the goalie and into the bottom center of the goal to make it a 2-0 game for the Minutewomen.
Massachusetts outshot Loyola Chicago, 12-4, with four shots on target for the Minutewomen and none on goal for the Ramblers. UMass' defense held the Ramblers to only two shots in each half that were all off target.
Graduate student forward Karina Groff led the team in shots with three, followed by six Minutewomen with one shot apiece, with Recinos, Gevanthor, Dickson and senior midfielder Emma Pedolzky placing their shots on goal. Loyola Chicago led in corner kicks, 4-2, over UMass.
Redshirt senior Bella Mendoza played the full 90 minutes in net, collecting her seventh shutout of the year with no saves on the afternoon. Deardroff allowed one goal and made one save in the full 90 minutes for the Ramblers.
Massachusetts will host Davidson for its final regular season home match on Thursday, October 24, at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
