AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer hosts Davidson on Thursday, October 24, at Rudd Field for its final regular season home contest, before visiting VCU on Sunday, October 27 for the regular season finale. Thursday's game is set for a 2 p.m. start, while Sunday's will begin at 1:30 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
Last Time Out
UMass currently sits at 10-4-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the Atlantic Conference with its 2-0 road victory over Loyola Chicago last Sunday.
Senior midfielder Bella Recinos netted a first half goal to take an early 1-0 lead at the 28:25 mark. In the second half, a breakaway goal from sophomore forward Caroline Dickson extended the Minutewomen's lead to 2-0.
Defensively, Massachusetts dominated the Ramblers, holding them to only four shots throughout the game with no shots on goal. The win for UMass gave Loyola Chicago its first loos at home and in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Redshirt senior Bella Mendoza collected her seventh shutout of the year with no saves on the day.
Record Book Tracking
Mendoza placed her name on the program's career saves list, ranking seventh after collecting her 255th save against Dayton, surpassing Kelly Nigh's (2000-03) 249 career saves.
Mendoza earned her seventh shutout of the year against in the 2-0 win at Loyola Chicago etching her name in the career records for the program. The San Ramon, California, native, is now seventh with 18 career shutouts, surpassing Cassidy Babin's (2014-17) 17 shutouts.
Additionally, graduate student Ella Curry put her name on the career games played list, taking over second with 86 games played, sitting behind former teammate Fiona Kane (89; 2019-23). She is also tied for sixth alongside Danielle Dion (1994-97) with 79 games started.
Recinos is two game-winning goals away from tying for 10th in the record books with 10 game-winners in her career.
A-10 Standings
The Minutewomen are currently fourth in the A-10 standings with their 5-2-1 record, collecting 16 points in the conference.
Dayton (7-1-0) sits atop the leaderboard with 21 points, while Saint Louis (6-0-2) is second with 20 points. Fordham (5-2-2) is third with 17 conference points and Loyola Chicago (3-1-4) rounds out the top-five with 13 points.
Statistically Speaking
UMass is fifth in points in the A-10 with 83, while ranking fifth in goals (30) and sixth in assists (23). Massachusetts is second in shutouts with seven on the season.
Recinos leads the team in points (20) and goals (nine), while adding two assists on the season. Her nine goals tie her for third the league, while her point total places her fifth. She also leads the team in game-winning goals with four and is tied for first in the A-10 Conference.
Recinos leads the team in shots (36) and shots on goal (20). In the league, she is tied for sixth in shots on goal.
Chandler Pedolzky, Emma Pedolzky and Curry lead the team in assists with three each on the year, while Chandler Pedolzky follows close behind in points with 11, notching four goals on the season. Her 11 points rank her 10th in the A-10.
Mendoza tallied 1,440 minutes in net for the Minutewomen, averaging a 1.06 goals-against-average (GAA) and a .742 save percentage. She has also accumulated seven shutouts on the year.
Mendoza has placed herself in the conference rankings, sitting seventh in goals-against-average with a 1.06. She is also eighth in total saves with 49, while tying for second in shutouts with seven, averaging .438 shutouts per game.
Scouting Davidson
The Minutewomen lead the all-time series over the Wildcats, 6-2-1. UMass and Davidson first met in Davidson, North Carolina, on November 2, 2014, as the contest resulted in a scoreless draw after double overtime. The two teams met last season on September 24, with UMass defeating Davidson, 5-0, on the road.
Davidson holds a 7-6-3 overall record, including a 3-4-1 A-10 record. The Wildcats earned league wins over Saint Joseph's (2-0), St. Bonaventure (4-0) and George Washington (4-0). Davidson tied Fordham, 1-1, earlier in the season.
Maddie Moody leads the team in points with 12 and in goals with six. Dakota Lyons follows close behind with 11 points on four goals and three assists. Sophia Whiddon sits atop the leaderboard in assists with five on the year, while adding two goals for nine points. Moody has placed a team-best 10 shots on goal out of a team-high 17 shots.
In net, Emily Smith has played in all 16 games for the Wildcats, accumulating 1,430 minutes. She holds a 0.94 GAA and a .800 save percentage with five shutouts on the season. Smith has allowed 15 goals and made 60 saves on the season.
Scouting VCU
The Rams hold a 4-2-3 advantage over the Minutewomen in the all-time series. The two programs first met on October 5, 2013, when VCU shutout UMass, 1-0, in double overtime. Massachusetts and VCU met last season at Rudd Field with Massachusetts winning, 1-0, in the day.
VCU sits at 3-8-4 overall and 2-2-4 in the A-10 Conference, with victories at Davidson (1-0) and over Duquesne (2-1). The Rams have tied George Mason (0-0), Saint Joseph's (1-1), St. Bonaventure (1-1) and Loyola Chicago (0-0).
Kanna Matsuhisa leads VCU in points with 13 on a team-best six goals and one assist. Y-Van Nguyen follows with five points, registering two goals of her own on the year and one assist. Matsuhisa has a team-leading 28 shots, as 16 of her shots have been on goal.
Allison Karpovich has tallied the most minutes in net for VCU with 1,273, and has started all 15 games. Karpovich averages a 1.41 GAA and a .740 save percentage, stopping 57 shots and allowing 20 goals. She has also totaled four shutouts on the year.
Looking Ahead
Massachusetts gears up for the Atlantic 10 Championship, with the quarterfinals round beginning on Friday, November 1 or Saturday, November 2, at the on-campus locations of the top four teams in the final standings. The semifinals are set for Wednesday, November 6, with the finals on Sunday, November 10 with both rounds being held on the on-campus location of the higher seed.
