Comeback Effort Falls Short as UMass Drops Match to Davidson 4-2

Oliver Akintade scored his first brace of the season.

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Massachusetts (6-3-4, 2-2-1 A10) rallied late on the road, ultimately falling short to Davidson (4-4-4, 3-2-0 A10) in a 4-2 decision on Saturday night.
 
Oliver Akintade scored his second and third goals of the season, netting a setup from Bilal Hersi in the 70thminute in addition to a penalty kick in the 84th minute to energize the Minutemen. However, a stout defensive effort from the Wildcats down the stretch halted the hopes of a comeback.
 
Breaking Down the Action
  •  Oliver Akintade fired off consecutive shots on goal, forcing Lucas Beltran to make his first two saves of the night early in the contest.
  • Layton Purchase followed up with a shot on goal of his own in the 15th minute, as Beltran was able to stop the scoring chance.
  • Nico Quanbeck opened the scoring for Davidson in the 26th minute to take the lead.
  • The Wildcats tried to double the lead in the 39th minute with a shot on goal, but Alex Geczy was able to make the save.
  • Blake Peterson sent Davidson into the half with a 2-0 cushion with a score in the 43rd minute.
  • Ayman Maadir continued carried Davidson's momentum into the second half, scoring in the 48th minute.
  • Akintade got the Minutemen on the board in the 70th minute, finishing a through ball from Bilal Hersi to cut the deficit to two.
  • Massachusetts went down a man in the 82nd minute after Alec Hughes received his second yellow card of the game to give the Wildcats a numbers advantage for the remainder of the game.
  • Akintade secured his first brace of the season in the 84th minute, converting a penalty kick to cut the lead to one.
  • The Wildcats closed the game out in the 90th minute with a goal to go up 4-2 in the final moments.
  • Layton Purchase earned another penalty kick for UMass, however Beltran made the stop as time expired.
