Three Second Half Goals Lead Minutemen Past George Washington

AMHERST, Mass. – Three separate minutemen scored in the second half to help UMass defeat George Washington 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Minutemen improve to 4-4-3 while the Revolutionaries drop to 2-6-3.
The Minutemen controlled the game from the start as they built up a 7-1 shot advantage in the first half. UMass had four corner attempts while holding George Washington no corners but the teams still went into the break knotted at zero.
In the second half the Minutemen were able to convert on their scoring chances. Michael Rojas was able to get UMass on the board first in the 57th minute when he netted his first goal as a minuteman.
Less than three minutes later, Bryant Keeney found Alec Hughes on a through ball that the senior forward was able to put away with his left in the 59th minute. The goal put Hughes in sole possession of eighth place on the UMass all-time career goals list with 29.
Andrew Ortiz rounded out the scoring in the 80th minute as he scored off an assist from Mike Willis and Pierre de la Qroix-Vaubois. The goal was his first of the season and the fourth of his career. Willis recorded his first point of the season on the play while De la Qroix-Vaubois recorded his first point as a Minuteman.
The Minutemen secured the clean sheet as they didn't surrender a shot on goal the entire game while outshooting George Washington 18-4.
The Minutemen hit the road for three straight games, starting with a Wednesday afternoon match against St. Bonaventure on October 4th. UMass
returns home to Rudd Field on Saturday, October 21st, as they square off with Davidson at 1 p.m..
