Women’s Soccer Drops Close 1-0 Match At Rutgers

Mendoza stopped five of six shots on the night.
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer dropped a close 1-0 contest to Rutgers University on Sunday night at Yurcak Field.
The Minutewomen move to 3-2-2 overall on the year, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 4-2-2 on the season.
Massachusetts and Rutgers went a full 45 minutes scoreless, as the Scarlet Knights outshot the Minutewomen, 6-3. UMass placed two shots on goal to Rutgers one on goal, with junior midfielder Bella Recinos and sophomore forward Nia Hislop holding the Minutewomen's first half opportunities.
Rutgers broke through first in the second half, to take a 1-0 lead. A penalty kick was rewarded to Allison Lowrey, allowing her to score in the top center of the net.
Rutgers held the advantage in shots with 18, as UMass took five shots throughout the contest. The Scarlet Knights tallied six shots on goal to the Minutewomen's two. Both programs had four corners apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Bella Mendoza made five saves on the night, allowing only one goal, through the full 90 minutes of play.
UMass returns to Rudd Field to begin Atlantic 10 Conference play, hosting George Washington on Thursday, September 14, at 4 p.m., before traveling to Dayton Sunday, September 17, for a 1 p.m. match. Both contests will be streamed on ESPN+.
