AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer concludes its four-game road stretch this week with a pair of games, visiting UMass Lowell on Thursday, August 24, at 6 p.m., before heading to Yale on Sunday, August 27, for a 5 p.m. match.
Last Time Out
The Minutewomen hold a 1-0-1 overall record after defeating Stony Brook last Thursday, 2-1, and ending in a scoreless draw with Vanderbilt last Sunday.
At Stony Brook, junior forward Ashley Lamond scored the first goal of the contest, assisted by Emma Pedolzky and Grace Pinkus, in the 60th minute. A penalty kick for the Seawolves in the 75th minute allowed Stony Brook to knot the game up at one apiece. In the 85th minute, sophomore forward Nia Hislop booted the ball into the bottom left of the goal, lifting UMass to the 2-1 victory.
Five saves from senior goalkeeper Bella Mendoza and strong defensive efforts played a significant role in the 0-0 draw at Vanderbilt. During the first half, the Commodores outshot the Minutewomen, 7-1, but key blocks from senior forward Emily McCormack and freshman defender Carolina Benitez in the box kept the match scoreless. Junior defender Juliana Ryan made crucial tackles in the second half to the keep the ball out of the box, while Mendoza made four save alone in the half, including back-to-back saves off a corner kick.
Keeping Track
Graduate student defender Fiona Kane placed her name on the program's career games started list, tying for 10th with Amy Trunk (1990-93) and Georgia Gibson (2012-15) after starting in her 73rd contest at Vanderbilt on Sunday. She will hold 10th in the record book solely with her next start at 74 games started.
Mendoza is 28 saves away from etching her name in the career records for the program. With 28 saves, she would tie Danielle Kriscenski (2012-15) for 10th with 163 career saves.
Scouting UMass Lowell
The Minutewomen and River Hawks are 1-1-2 in the all-time series against each other. The two teams first met on August 29, 2019, at Lowell, Massachusetts, with the game resulting in a 2-2 tie through double overtime. Massachusetts and UMass Lowell last met on August 26, 2021, in Amherst, with the Minutewomen coming out on top 3-0 over the River Hawks.
UMass Lowell stands at 0-1-1 overall on the year, falling to Merrimack, 2-1, in its season opener and tying 1-1 with Fairfield last Sunday. Calliste Brookshire notched the River Hawks two goals on the season, scoring one in each game, to tally a team-leading four points. Marissa Saucedo registered an assist on Brookshire's goal at Fairfield, while Hope Santaniello leads the team in shots with five, followed by Brookshire and Laure Cetina Fernandez with four apiece.
Scouting Yale
The Minutewomen lead the all-time series with the Bulldogs, 13-2-0. First meeting in UMass' inaugural season in 1978, Massachusetts took down Yale, 7-1, in the program's first ever contest. The two teams met last on September 15, 2021, when the Minutewomen edged the Bulldogs, 1-0, at Rudd Field.
Yale holds a 1-0-0 record overall, downing Manhattan, 4-1, last Saturday. Addison Bray leads the team with four points on two goals, while Abigail Solomon follows with three points after notching one goal and one assist. Anita Thorvaldsdottir has two points with one goal and Abby Moos tallied a point off an assist.
The Bulldogs will compete at Sacred Heart on Friday, August 25, at 7 p.m., prior to Sunday's match.
Looking Ahead
UMass returns to Rudd Field for two games on Thursday, August 31, against Syracuse at 4 p.m., and Sunday, September 3, to face Bryant at 1 p.m. Thursday's contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
