Strong Defensive Effort Leads To Scoreless Draw For Women’s Soccer

August 20, 2023 | Women's Soccer

UMass and Vanderbilt end in 0-0 tie behind key saves from Bella Mendoza.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer played to a scoreless draw with Vanderbilt University behind five saves from senior goalkeeper Bella Mendoza on Sunday afternoon at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.

The Minutewomen move to 1-0-1 overall on the season, as the Commodores also sit at 1-0-1 on the year.

The UMass offense struggled to get anything going in the first half, as Vanderbilt outshot Massachusetts, 7-1. On the Commodores two shots on goal, senior forward Emily McCormack and freshman defender Carolina Benitez came up with  blocks in the box to keep the score at 0-0 heading into halftime.

UMass' defense continued its strong play throughout the second half, as the Minutewomen compiled three shots, but only two on goal by junior forward Ashley Lamond and junior midfielder Bella Recinos. Junior defender Juliana Ryan made some crucial tackles to keep the ball out of the box, while Mendoza made four saves in the half, including significant back-to-back saves off Vanderbilt's corner kick. Neither team was able to breakthrough, resulting in a scoreless draw.

Massachusetts was outshot, 23-4, by Vanderbilt, as the Commodores had six shots on goal to UMass' two. The Minutewomen took one corner kick throughout the match, while Vanderbilt had nine corner kick opportunities.

Senior goalkeepers Megan Olszewski and Mendoza shared time in the net, with neither allowing a goal. Mendoza saw the majority of time in goal, making five saves, with four in the second half alone.

Massachusetts travels across the Commonwealth to Lowell, Mass., to face off against UMass Lowell at 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 24.
