Hislop Lifts Women’s Soccer To 2-1 Victory In Regular Season Opener At Stony Brook

Nia Hislop notched her first collegiate goal of her career to aid the Minutewomen to the first win of the 2023 season.
STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Nia Hislop lifted the University of Massachusetts women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Stony Brook University with her first collegiate goal of her career in the 85th minute at LaValle Stadium on Thursday evening.
The Minutewomen begin the 2023 season with a 1-0-0 overall record, while the Seawolves dropped to 0-1-0 overall.
After a scoreless first half, junior forward Ashley Lamond notched the first goal of the season for UMass off a corner kick, assisted Emma Pedolzky and Grace Pinkus by in the 60th minute, giving the Minutewomen a 1-0 advantage. In the 75th minute of action, a handball call in the box on Massachusetts allowed a penalty kick for Stony Brook. The Seawolves' Linn Beck capitalized on the opportunity, bringing the game to a 1-1 draw. Hislop netted a late goal in the 85th minute into the bottom left of the goal to help UMass regain the lead at 2-1.
UMass and Stony Brook both had nine shots apiece, as the Minutewomen tallied seven on target, while the Seawolves registered two on goal.
Senior goalkeepers Megan Olszewski and Bella Mendoza shared time in the net, each playing a half. Mendoza made one key save late in the second half to keep the Minutewomen ahead and allowed only one goal on the night.
Massachusetts continues on the road with a trip to Nashville, Tennessee, on Sunday, August 20, to take on Vanderbilt at 1 p.m.
