Women’s Soccer Opens 2023 Season On The Road At Stony Brook, Vanderbilt

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer kicks off its 2023 regular season with two road contests on opening week. The Minutewomen are in action on Thursday, August 17, at Stony Brook at 6:30 p.m., before heading to Nashville, Tennessee on Sunday, August 20, to face Vanderbilt at 1 p.m.
 
The 2023 season marks the 46th season for the program, with UMass holding an overall record of 495-280-71 (.627), and the sixth season under the leadership of head coach Jason Dowiak.
 
The Squad
Massachusetts returns 25 players from last season's team, including Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team selection Nia Hislop and A-10 All-Academic Team member Ella Curry. Graduate students Fiona Kane and Lauren Smida also rejoined the team for the 2023 season for their fifth year.
 
Additionally, UMass welcomes three newcomers for the 2023 campaign. The group features junior transfer Emma Pedolzky from Massachusetts, and freshmen Caroline Dickson and Carolina Benitez from Connecticut and New York, respectively.
 
The 2022 Season
UMass finished last season with a 5-9-5 overall record and a 4-4-2 mark in conference play. In the A-10 Championships, the seventh-seeded Minutewomen fell to the No. 2-seed Dayton in the A-10 Quarterfinals.
 
Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches Poll
Massachusetts was picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches Poll as announced by the league on Monday. UMass received 173 votes, including one first place vote, in the poll with Saint Louis tabbed to finish first followed by Dayton and VCU.
 
Scouting Stony Brook
The Minutewomen and Seawolves are tied in the all-time series at 1-1-0. The two programs first met in Amherst on August 25, 2017, as Stony Brook came out on top, 2-0, on the day. UMass and Stony Brook last met for the 2020-21 season on March 3. The Minutewomen took down the Seawolves, 2-0, at Rudd Field.
 
Stony Brook posted a 7-8-4 record in 2022, reaching the Colonial Athletic Association Quarterfinals as the No. 6 seed. The Seawolves were voted to finish 10th in the 2023 conference standings in a vote of the league coaches.
 
Scouting Vanderbilt
The Commodores hold a 1-0-0 advantage in the all-time series, as Vanderbilt defeated the Minutewomen, 3-1, in Amherst in the two programs only meeting on August 27, 2017.
 
Vanderbilt went 12-5-4 overall last season, and reached the Southeastern Conference Semifinals as the fifth-seeded team, ultimately falling to No. 3 Alabama. The Commodores received an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, as well defeating No. 25 Clemson, 1-0, in the opening round, before dropping a close 2-1 match to No. 12 Northwestern in the Second Round. Vanderbilt is predicted to finish seventh in the SEC standings, according to the league coaches vote.
 
Looking Ahead
UMass will play three straight games away following Thursday's season opener on the road, beginning with Vanderbilt on Sunday, August 20 at 1 p.m. The Minutewomen travel across the Commonwealth to face off against UMass Lowell on Thursday, August 24, at 6 p.m., before wrapping up the road stretch at Yale on Sunday, August 27, at 5 p.m. Massachusetts will host Syracuse for its home opener at 4 p.m. at Rudd Field on Thursday, August 31 and welcome Bryant to Amherst on Sunday, September 3, for a 1 p.m. matchup.
