Massachusetts Baseball Drops Heartbreaker 9-8 In The Ninth To UMass Lowell

Minutemen use late rally to tie it up, but River Hawks walk it off in the ninth.
The Minutemen move to 11-30 overall, while the River Hawks improve to an overall record of 17-28.
Justin Blumenthal tallied three hits to lead the team, including a double, while Steve Luttazi followed with two hits of his own. Four Minutemen also contributed a hit on the evening. Will MacLean and Carter Hanson scored two runs apiece with four other Minutemen adding a run to UMass' total. Blumenthal also had a team high three RBI, as MacLean recorded two RBI and both Hanson and Mike Gervasi registered one each. Gervasi recorded a double, as well.
UMass Lowell scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. The River Hawks then added three more runs in the second inning to pull ahead 5-0. Another run in the fifth frame aided UMass Lowell to a 6-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, MacLean led off, getting hit by a pitch to take first base, before advancing to second on a passed ball. With one out, Luttazi grounded out to the first baseman, helping MacLean move into scoring position at third. Hanson reached first on an error by the River Hawks' second baseman, allowing MacLean to cross the plate and get the Minutemen on the board. Hanson took off for second and an error on the throw by the catcher kept him running to third. Blumenthal singled to left field driving Hanson home, making it a 6-2 contest, in favor of UMass Lowell.
A two-run double by the River Hawks, though, in the bottom half of the sixth extended their lead to 8-2.
Massachusetts picked up a run in the ninth, as Michael Toth started the inning reaching first on an error. Sam Hill was hit by a pitch with the Minutemen occupying first and second. Mike Gervasi stepped up to the plate, hitting a RBI double to left center field, bringing around Toth, making it an 8-3 contest. MacLean hit a one-out, two-run single to right center field, scoring both Hill and Gervasi to get UMass back within three runs. Maclean stole second, before Luttazi and Hanson were walked in back-to-back at bats. With the bases loaded, Blumenthal doubled to left field, with MacLean and Luttazi crossing the plate to make it an 8-7 game. UMass went around the batting order, as Toth was hit by a pitch to take first with Hanson and Blumenthal on third and second, respectively. A wild pitch by the River Hawks allowed the Massachusetts to bring the game to an 8-8 draw, scoring Hanson from third.
With a tied game, heading into the bottom half of the ninth, UMass Lowell walked off for a 9-8 victory on a two-pitch solo home run.
On the mound, Charlie Devin (0-2) pitched one complete inning, giving up one run on three hits and dealing two strikeouts, picking up the loss for UMass. Michael Simes (2-2) received the win for UMass Lowell, allowing no runs and no hits with no strikeouts in 0.1 innings of work.
Massachusetts returns to Earl Lorden Field to take on Stonehill on Wednesday, May 10, at 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
