Massachusetts Baseball Walks Off With 8-7 Extra Inning Win Over Rhode Island

May 06, 2023 | Baseball

Skagerlind’s sacrifice fly lifts Minutemen over Rams in 10th inning.

AMHERST, Mass. – Junior Kevin Skagerlind's RBI sacrifice fly to right field drove in fellow classmate Chris Pearsons from scoring position in the bottom of the 10th to lift the University of Massachusetts baseball team to an 8-7 come-from-behind victory over the University of Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.

The win improved UMass to 11-28 overall and 4-13 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while URI moved to 19-24 overall, including 9-8 in the league.

Will MacLean led the way, going 3-for-4 on the day, including his fifth home run of the season, with two runs and two RBI. Nolan Tichy, Justin Blumenthal and Pearsons all tallied two hits, as Skagerlind, Michael Toth and Carter Hanson registered one hit each. Pearsons had a team high three RBI, matching his career-best with Tichy driving in two, with both Pearsons and Tichy recording doubles on the afternoon. Skagerlind also contributed two runs, while four Minutemen added one run apiece.

Rhode Island struck first with a solo homer to left field late in the opening frame. After three and a half scoreless innings, the Rams tacked on three more runs in the fifth with another solo home run, a RBI double and a RBI single to lead 4-0.

The Minutemen got on the board in the sixth inning to cut their deficit in half. Skagerlind led off with a single up the middle, before MacLean singled to left center field. A passed ball allowed both Skagerlind and MacLean to advance to third and second, respectively. Tichy hit a double to right center field, knocking in Skagerlind and Maclean, making it a 4-2 contest.

The score remained the same through the seventh and eighth, but a ninth inning rally helped Massachusetts bring the game to a 4-4 draw. After Hanson singled through the left side, a fielder's choice put Skagerlind on first, as Hanson was out at second. MacLean stepped up to the plate and crushed a two-run long ball over the right center field hedges to knot up the game and need extra innings to decide a winner.

URI put up three runs in the top of the 10th to reclaim the lead at 7-4, but the Ram's lead was short-lived, as the Minutemen got the bats going in the bottom half of the frame. Blumenthal singled to the shortstop, before Toth hit a single of his own to center field. Sam Hill saw four straight balls to take first and load the bases up. Pearsons cranked a shot to right center field for a stand up double to clear the bases, as Blumenthal, Toth and Hill crossed the plate. With the game tied once more at 7-7, Hanson grounded out with a sacrifice bunt, moving Pearsons over to third base. Skagerlind hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Pearsons to tag up and come across the dish to lift Massachusetts to an 8-7 walk-off victory.

Mikey Jensen (1-1) earned the win on the mound for UMass, pitching two complete innings, and allowing three runs on as many hits, one walk and striking out one. Ryan Andrade (1-1) took the loss for Rhode Island after giving up six runs on six hits, walking one and dealing three strikeouts.

Massachusetts looks to take the rubber match against Rhode Island on Sunday, May 7, in the series finale at 12 p.m. at the Earl.
