Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball team makes a trip to Hamden, Connecticut, to take on Quinnipiac University on Wednesday, May 3, at Quinnipiac Baseball Field at 3 p.m.
 
The Minutemen hold a 10-26 overall record after taking two-of-three in the weekend series with St. Bonaventure. The Bobcats are 17-23 overall and are coming off 2-1 weekend series with Mount St. Mary's, winning the finale 10-2 on Sunday.  
 
Recap in a Minute
UMass took game one and two of the three-game series at St. Bonaventure last Friday and Saturday, with the Bonnies picking up the win in the final game. The Minutemen won 7-5 on Friday, before edging the Bonnies, 7-6, on Saturday.   
 
In game one, the freshmen shined as Sam Belliveau, Justin Blumenthal and Michael Toth all recorded career highs, while Belliveau and Mikey Jensen received their first collegiate win and save, respectively. Blumenthal led the team with a career high three hits, including a double, and added a career-best two runs. Toth, Kevin Skagerlind and Nolan Tichy followed with two hits apiece, as Toth recorded a career high two doubles on the day. Will MacLean had one hit on a triple. MacLean and Blumenthal tallied two runs each, while Tichy and Toth registered two RBI apiece. Skagerlind, MacLean and Carter Hanson also had a RBI on the day. Belliveau picked up his first collegiate winning decision for UMass, tossing three complete innings and allowing only two hits, and also dealt a career-best four strikeouts. Jensen entered for 0.1 innings to earn his first collegiate save, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out one.
 
During a close game two, Blumenthal led UMass with four hits, as four Minutemen followed with two hits apiece, including MacLean who added a double to his stat sheet. Hanson totaled a team-high three runs, while Skagerlind, Blumenthal, Toth and Chris Pearsons all had one each. Seven Minutemen recorded a RBI. Zack Given earned his first win of the season, pitching 2.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits, walking two and having struck out three. Charlie Devin picked up his first collegiate save, allowing only one hit and one walk in 2.2 innings of work.
 
All-Time vs. Quinnipiac
The Minutemen and Bobcats will meet for the 16th time in program history, since their first meeting on March 21, 2000, where UMass won 5-4 on the day. Massachusetts took down Quinnipiac, 4-3, in the two programs last meeting on May 17, 2022. The win improved the Minutemen 10-5 in the all-time series with the Bobcats.

It's Going, Going, And It's Gone
Massachusetts has tallied 24 homeruns in 36 games played, from eight Minutemen. Tichy leads the production with eight, followed closely by Hanson with five. MacLean and Steve Luttazi recorded four and three, respectively, so far, while Zack Zaetta, Mike Gervasi, Sam Hill and Ryan Coleman have one apiece.
 
Hanson recorded his first long ball of the year in the first game of the season at Navy, before adding another in the game three of the UNC Asheville series. Coleman garnered his first career homer in game one at UNC Asheville, while Hill registered his first home run in game three of at UNC Asheville. Luttazi and MacLean had their first of the season in the Navy series in game three and game two, respectively. Gervasi had his first homer in game one of the Penn series, as Tichy garnered his first of the season in game three at Penn. Zaetta registered his first homer in game one at Saint Joseph's.
 
Tichy clubbed a career high two homers against Siena on April 26.

On A Roll…
Five Minutemen are riding a current hitting streak, so far this season. Tichy and Blumenthal sit atop the leaderboard with six, followed by Hanson and Pearsons with two games apiece. Coleman is on a one-contest streak.
 
MacLean had a 16-game streak, which was the team's longest, before it came to an end. Hanson holds the second longest at nine, before that came to an end, as well.
 
MacLean is on a current 20-game reached base streak, as Luttazi follows with 14. Tichy recorded seven straight games with a reached base streak, while Hanson and Blumenthal have six. Zaetta has five games with a reached base streak, with Pearsons and Gervasi recording three and two, respectively. Coleman has on a one-contest streak.
 
MacLean holds the teams' longest streak with a total of 20 games. Luttazi (14) and Zaetta's (13) consecutive game totals are the teams' second and third longest, respectively, with MacLean and Luttazi holding the longest current streaks.

[Multi]ple Games
UMass has a strong showing with multi-hit games, as the Minutemen have run their total of multi-hit performances to 76. Luttazi leads the production with 13, which included three three-hit contests and two four hit games. MacLean follows with 12 apiece, as Hanson and Tichy registered 10, including two four-hit conteste from Tichy. Zaetta totaled nine, while Hill and Blumenthal have five contests each. Toth has four, as Skagerlind and Gervasi tallied three apiece. Pearsons and Jacob Sloss contributed one each to UMass' multi-hit total.
 
Massachusetts has also contributed a total of 38 multi-RBI games, led by Tichy with eight, including a five-plus RBI game. Hanson and Luttazi follow with six each, Tichy and Luttazi, which includes a three-run contest each for Hanson and Luttazi. Gervasi and MacLean have three, while both Zaetta, Skagerlind, Blumenthal and Toth all have garnered two multi-RBI contests. Four other Minutemen have tallied one game each, with a three-run contest from both Sloss.
 
Weekly Honors
After a stellar performance through five games last week, Tichy tabbed the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on May 1, while also selected as one of 15 College Baseball News National Players of the Week.
 
Tichy posted a slash line of .591/.583/1.136 on a 4-1 week for the Minutemen. The junior tallied 13 hits in 22 at bats, including four home runs, 13 RBI, five runs, a walk and three stolen bases on the week. In the field, he totaled four putouts. Against Hartford (4/25), he went 3-for-5 with one homer and added two RBI and two runs on the day. Tichy's career day vs. Siena (4/26) saw a career-best two home runs, going 3-for-4 overall, and a career high six RBI, while registering two runs, a walk and a stolen base. In the weekend series at St. Bonaventure, he recorded two RBI and a career-high matching two stolen bases in game one, and went 3-for-4, which included his eighth home run of the season, with two RBI and a run during game three. 
 
Keeping it in the Family
The 2023 season marks the 57th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Sixth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.

Massachusetts hosts Rhode Island for a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series on Friday, May 5 through Sunday, May 7. Friday's game begins at 3 p.m., before a start time of 1 p.m. on Saturday. The series will conclude at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
