Baseball Edged Out By Fairfield, 10-9
May 16, 2023 | Baseball
Blumenthal led the Minutemen with two hits and two RBI in the loss.
UMass moved to 13-33 overall, as Fairfield improved to 31-16 on the season.
Justin Blumenthal led the team with two hits and two RBI, while Kevin Skagerlind, Steve Luttazi and Carter Hanson had one hit apiece. Hanson also tallied two RBI with Will MacLean, Nolan Tihcy and Luttazi following with one each. Skagerlind and Tichy each scored two runs for UMass, as five Minutemen contributed a run to the total.
Fairfield got on the board first in the opening frame on a sacrifice fly, but in the bottom half of the inning, Massachusetts claimed the lead at 3-1. Skagerlind started off the inning reaching first on an error, before advancing to second. MacLean grounded out but helped Skagerlind move into scoring position. With two outs, Luttazi singled to left field, driving in Skagerlind. A single by Hanson advanced Luttazi to third, as Blumenthal hit a single of his own to score Luttazi and give UMass its second run of the day. Hanson sat at third after Blumenthal's single and a wild pitch aided Hanson across the dish.
A RBI single in the third gave the Stags another run to make it a 3-2 game. Fairfield reclaimed the lead at 7-3 with the help of a five-run fourth inning. Fairfield pushed three more runs across the plate to pull ahead 10-3 in the top of the sixth frame.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Minutemen came back within two at 10-8. With one out and the bases loaded, MacLean was walked to send Sam Hill home, before Tichy reached first on a fielding error with the bases still loaded up, allowing Jake Given to score. A two-out walk for Hanson advanced Skagerlind home, followed by MacLean crossing the dish to make room for Blumenthal after being walked. A balk by the pitcher advanced all the base runners around with Tichy touching home plate.
UMass tallied another run on a sacrifice fly by Hanson, scoring Tichy to close the gap to one at 10-9, but it was not enough as Fairfield edged out the Minutemen for the win.
On the mound, Scott LeSieur (2-1) had the loss for Massachusetts. LeSieur went four complete innings and allowed seven runs on 10 hits, a walk and struck out three. Evan Berta (2-0) picked up the win for Fairfield, tossing two innings and only walking one, while dealing one strikeout. Jack Erbeck earned the save for the Stags, allowing no runs, hits or walks and striking out two in one complete inning.
Massachusetts concludes the regular season with a three-game A-10 series with Dayton on Thursday, May 18 through Saturday, May 20. Both Thursday and Friday's contests are set for a 1 p.m. start, while Sunday is slated for a 12 p.m. first pitch. All games will be streamed on ESPN+, and on Sunday, UMass will honor its 16-member senior class.
