Baseball Bested By Dayton In Game One

Minutemen and Flyers prepare for doubleheader on Friday, beginning at 12 p.m.
UMass dropped to 13-34 overall and 5-17 in the Atlantic 10, while Dayton improved to 23-31 on the season, including 13-8 in the league.
Carter Hanson led the team with three hits, including a double, and three runs, while adding a RBI to his stat sheet. Will MacLean, Kyle Hoog and Justin Blumenthal had two hits each, with six Minutemen tallying one apiece. Ryan Coleman drove in a team-best five runs, including four on the first grand slam of his career. Coleman also registered two runs, along with Blumenthal and Mike Gervasi. Logan Rooney recorded two RBI as six Minutemen contributed one RBI each.
Dayton scored at least one run in the first six frames. The Flyers put up 13 runs in the top of the sixth to hold a 25-2 lead after the first half of the inning. Massachusetts got on the board in the bottom of the second as Michael Toth came across the plate on a Sam Hill RBI single after Toth doubled to right center field. In the bottom of the third, Blumenthal led off with a triple to center field, before Gervasi grounded out to the shortstop. Gervasi's ground ball allowed Blumenthal to score for the Minutemen's second run of the day.
Massachusetts plated eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 25-10 contest. A sacrifice fly from Steve Luttazi, three RBI singles, a bases loaded walk and an advancement on a wild pitch helped the Minutemen get within 15 runs.
The Flyers tacked on six more runs in the top of the eighth to extend their lead to 31-10. Coleman's two-out grand slam gave UMass four more runs in the bottom half of the frame, but Dayton it was not enough as Dayton grabbed another run in the ninth to secure the 32-14 win.
On the mound, Sam Belliveau (2-2) had the loss for UMass, tossing three complete innings, and giving up seven runs on four hits, three walks, while striking out three. Parker Bard (2-2) earned the win for Dayton, allowing only five runs, all earned, four hits, two walks and dealing three strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
Massachusetts wraps up the regular season with a Friday afternoon doubleheader against Dayton, starting at 12 p.m. at the Earl on ESPN+. The final game of the series will follow the conclusion of the first game of the day.
