Baseball Falters To Fordham, 12-5, In Series Finale

MacLean records only multi-hit effort for the Minutemen in the loss.
UMass moved to 13-32 overall and 5-15 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Fordham improved to 19-32 overall, including 7-14 in league competition.
Will MacLean recorded the only multi-hit effort of the day for UMass, going 3-for-5, as six Minutemen registered one hit each. Kevin Skagerlind tallied a team-leading two runs and added a hit and RBI. Steve Luttazi, Michael Toth and Sam Hill also scored runs for UMass, while Nolan Tichy, Justin Blumenthal and Jacob Sloss had one RBI apiece.
A five-run bottom of the first gave Fordham the early lead. The Rams added two more runs in the second to extend their lead to 7-0. UMass notched a run in the third inning to get on the board. With one out, Skagerlind was walked, before MacLean singled through the left side, advancing Skagerlind into scoring position. Tichy hit a single of his own to center field, bringing Skagerlind home, making it a 7-1 contest.
Fordham pulled ahead further at 10-1 in the fourth on a three-run homer. In the fifth frame, Skagerlind hit a single to right field, followed by a single from MacLean. Tichy reached first base on a fielder;s choice, as MacLean was out at second. Skagerlind advanced to third on the play, and an error by Fordham's second baseman helped Skagerlind come across the dish, for a 10-2 game.
UMass scored two runs in the sixth, as Toth took his place on first after being walked. Hill singled to right field, before Sloss hit a double down the right field line, driving in Toth. The next at bat saw a sacrifice fly from Skagerlind, with Hill tagging up at third and heading home to make it a 10-4 game.
Luttazi started the seventh frame with a one-out double and advanced to third on a fielding error by the right fielder. Blumenthal grounded out to first base, but Luttazi crossed the plate to cut the Minutemen's deficit in half at 10-5. The Rams were able to tack on two more in the bottom of the seventh and pick up the 12-5 win.
On the mound, Jack Steele (0-5) had the loss for Massachusetts, giving up five runs, all earned, two hits, walking two and throwing two strikeouts in one inning pitched. Nolan Hughes (2-3) received the win for Fordham tossing six complete innings, and allowing four runs on eight hits, with only three runs earned, four walks and dealing eight strikeouts on the afternoon.
Massachusetts returns to Earl Lorden Field on Tuesday, May 16, as the Minutemen host Fairfield at 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
