The Minutemen and Rams prepare for a rubber match on Sunday afternoon.

BRONX, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell 5-2 to Fordham University on Saturday afternoon at Houlihan Park. UMass and Fordham are now tied 1-1 in the series and will prepare for the rubber match on Sunday.

UMass moved to 13-31 overall and 5-14 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Fordham improved to 18-32 overall, including 6-14 in league competition.

Carter Hanson went 2-for-4 on the day to lead the team, while six Minutemen recorded one hit each, including Will MacLean, who registered his sixth home run of the season. Nolan Tichy also had a double on the afternoon. MacLean and Jack Peters tallied one RBI each, as MacLean and Justin Blumenthal scored Massachusetts' two runs.

Fordham got on the board first with a RBI single to center field to lead 1-0 in the opening frame. UMass brought the game to a 1-1 draw in the top of the fourth. With one out, Blumenthal walked to take his place at first base, before a single from Hanson put the Minutemen on first and second. Back-to-back walks saw Michael Toth load the bases and Blumenthal score to make room for Peters.

In the bottom of the fourth, a solo home run for the Rams put them back on top at 2-1. Fordham scored three more runs in the fifth inning on back-to-back RBI doubles and a wild pitch to extend its lead to 5-1.

MacLean hit a two-out solo homer over the right field fence gave the Minutemen another run in the seventh, but it was not enough as the Rams picked up the 5-2 win.

Taylor Perrett (1-6) took the loss for UMass, giving up five runs, eight hits and striking out four in 4.1 innings of work. Nate Scott (2-2) had the win Fordham, going 3.1 innings and allowing one run on three hits, walking one and dealing two strikeouts. Ben Kovel earned the save in one complete inning pitched with no runs, no hits and no walks allowed.

Massachusetts and Fordham face off on Sunday, May 14, in the series finale at 12 p.m. at Houlihan Park. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
