Ninth Inning Comeback Falls Short Against Davidson

April 08, 2023 | Baseball

Minutemen come up short, 4-3, at the Earl on Saturday afternoon.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball scored two in the ninth inning, but UMass was unable to complete the comeback effort as the squad fell, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field to Davidson College.

UMass moved 4-18 overall on the year and 0-5 in the Atlantic 10, while Davidson improved to 18-11 and 4-1 in conference play.

Four Minutemen contributed one hit each, including a home run by Carter Hanson. Hanson added a run and RBI, while Mike Gervasi had a RBI of his own. Zack Zaetta and Will MacLean tallied a run for the Minutemen.

A two-run single for Davidson in the first gave the Wildcats the lead early. Davidson tacked on an unearned run in the third on an error to make it a 3-0 contest.

Both teams held off one another through four and a half innings, before Hanson gave life to the Massachusetts bench. A two-out homer to right center field marked Hanson's fourth of the year and put the Minutemen on the boad, 3-1.

In the top of the ninth, a sacrifice fly for the Wildcats allowed them to take a run back to pull ahead, 4-1. UMass began a rally in the bottom half of the final frame, as the bases loaded with two walks and a hit by pitch. A wild pitch helped Zaetta come across the plate to cut the deficit in half at 4-2. With one out, Gervasi grounded out, but MacLean took off for home to bring Massachusetts back within one. An intentional walk placed Hanson on first, before Sam Hill took ball four on a full count to load up the bases. Davidson was able to record the final out of the game, leaving the score at its final of 4-3.

Taylor Perrett (1-4) had the loss for UMass, allowing three runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out three in six complete innings. Ryan Feczko (3-3) tabbed the win for Davidson, tossing six innings, and giving up only three hits, walking two and dealing six strikeouts. AJ Pabst (S, 1) claimed the save for the Wildcats in 0.1 innings.

UMass and Davidson compete in the series finale on Sunday, April 9, at 12 p.m. at the Earl. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
