Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball hosts the ninth-ranked Boston College Eagles on Tuesday, April 4, at Earl Lorden Field, for the Opening Round of the 32nd Baseball Beanpot. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m., on ESPN+, with Tuesday's results determining placement in the tournament's consolation and championship games on Tuesday, April 11.

UMass holds a 4-15 overall record with a series loss to Atlantic 10 rival Saint Louis, while BC sits at 20-6 overall on the season, and are coming off a 24-12 win over Georgia Tech. The Eagles are 12-4 on the road and are on a two-game winning streak.

Recap in a Minute
UMass dropped its opening A-10 series against Saint Louis last weekend. The Minutemen kept game two of the series close, but the Billikens were able to score two in the ninth and walk it off for the 7-6 victory.

Minutemen in the Beanpot
Massachusetts has competed annually in the Beanpot since 1996 and captured the tournament crown six times (1996-98, 2000, 2008, 2012). Perhaps one of the most notable Beanpot pitching performances in program history came on April 22, 19997, when former Minuteman Scott Barnsby dealt a no-hitter at Fenway Park in the Semifinals against Northeastern. Barnsby's no-no was the first within the confines of the historic ballpark since 1965 and first such nine-inning performance by a UMass pitcher since 1957.

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Beanpot Tournament was canceled, and the 2021 tournament was not held.

In the tournament, UMass holds a 25-24 overall record, while Boston College holds a 9-6 advantage in the series.

It's Going, Going, And It's Gone
Massachusetts has tallied 10 homeruns in 19 games played, from seven Minutemen. Carter Hanson, Nolan Tichy and Will MacLean lead the team with two apiece, while Ryan Coleman, Mike Gervasi, Sam Hill and Steve Luttazi have one each on the year.

Hanson recorded his first long ball of the year in the first game of the season at Navy, before adding another in the game three of the UNC Asheville series. Coleman garnered his first career homer in game one at UNC Asheville, while Hill registered his first home run in game three of at UNC Asheville. Luttazi and MacLean had their first of the season in the Navy series in game three and game two, respectively. Gervasi had his first homer in game one of the Penn series, as Tichy garnered his first of the season in game three at Penn.

On A Roll…
Seven Minutemen are riding a current hitting streak, so far this season. Zack Zaetta sits atop the leaderboard with five, while Justin Blumenthal has two games. Jacob Sloss, Gervasi, MacLean, Logan Rooney and Jake Given all have a one-game hitting streak apiece. Hanson holds the longest streak with six games, before it came to an end. Zaetta and Tichy recorded five games each, with Zaetta still on the current streak.

Zaetta is on a current eight-game reached base streak, as Tichy follows with six. MacLean and Luttazi recorded six straight games with a reached base streak, with Sloss and Toth both on a three-game streak. Zaetta and MacLean holds the teams' longest streak with eight games, before MacLean's streak came to an end.

[Multi]ple Games
UMass has a strong showing with multi-hit games, as the Minutemen have run their total of multi-hit performances to 31. Zaetta leads the production with eight, followed by Luttazi with seven, which included three three-hit contests. Tichy and MacLean have registered four each, with Tichy recording four hits both at Gardner-Webb (3/15) and against UAlbany (3/28). Hanson and Gervasi tallied three and two, respectively.  Chris Pearsons, Sloss and Toth all contributed one each to UMass' multi-hit total.

Massachusetts has also contributed a total of 12 multi-RBI games, led by Luttazi with three, all being two-run contests. Hanson and Tichy have garnered two multi-RBI contests, as five other Minutemen have tallied one game each, including a three-run contest from Sloss.

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2023 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 140th season. Twenty-one members of the team are back from the 2022 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including nine freshman, one sophomore and four transfers.

Keeping it in the Family
The 2023 season marks the 57th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Sixth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.

On Deck
Massachusetts returns to A-10 Conference play for a three-game series against Davidson on Friday, April 7 through Sunday, April 9, at Earl Lorden. Friday's contest will begin at 3 p.m., before a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. First pitch for the series finale is set for 12 p.m.
