Massachusetts Baseball Drops Game Three To Saint Joseph’s, 7-3

Steele dealt a season-high five strikeouts in a season best 5.2 innings of work in the loss.
UMass moved to 6-25 overall and 1-11 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph's improved to 15-19 overall on the season, including 7-5 in league play.
Carter Hanson and Justin Blumenthal registered two hits on the afternoon, while six Minutemen tallied on each. Will MacLean, Hanson and Blumenthal all recorded a RBI, with Kevin Skagerlind, Hanson and Sam Hill tallied one run apiece.
A single to left field by Skagerlind opened the contest, before a bunt from Steve Luttazi put both Luttazi and Skagerlind on first and second, respectively. Nolan Tichy hit a single to center field to load up the bases. Hanson had a RBI sacrifice fly, scoring Skagerlind, as the Minutemen took a 1-0 lead early.
A two RBI double in the second inning and a two-run single in the third allowed Saint Joseph's to claim a 4-1 lead. UMass cut the deficit in half at 4-2 in the fourth, as Hill led off with a walk. Chris Pearsons then singled to center field, before Skagerlind was walked, putting Minutemen on all three bases. MacLean grounded out to the shortstop, but advanced Hill to home.
Two home runs for the Hawks extended their lead to 6-2 in the sixth frame.
In the top of the seventh, Massachusetts took a run back to make it a 6-3 game. With two outs, Hanson singled through the right side to take his place on first. Michael Toth saw four straight balls to take his base, before Blumenthal knocked in Hanson on a single to right field. The bottom half of the inning saw a RBI double for SJU to pull ahead by four runs and bring the game to its final score of 7-3.
Jack Steele (0-3) took the loss for Massachusetts. Steele tossed a season-high 5.2 innings, giving up six runs on nine hits, no walks and dealing a season best five strikeouts on the day. Domenic Picone (2-5) received the win for Saint Joseph's, allowing two runs, seven hits, four walks and three strike in six complete frames, while Matt McShane earned his second save of the season, only allowing one run on three hits, a walk and striking out two in three innings of work.
Massachusetts prepares for two midweek matchups, welcoming Hartford on Tuesday, April 25, and Siena on Wednesday, April 26, to Earl Lorden Field. Both contests will be streamed on ESPN+ at 3 p.m.
