April 15, 2023 | Baseball
The win marked the first conference win of the season for the Minutemen and evened the series with the Spiders.
UMass improved to 5-21 overall and 1-7 in the league, while Richmond moved to 15-20 overall, including 4-4 in the A-10.
Kevin Skagerlind and Carter Hanson had three hits apiece, including a double each and a home run from Hanson. Will MacLean tallied two hits with a double and a homer of his own. Six Minutemen registered one hit on the day, which included Sam Hill's double. Skagerlind, MacLean and Hanson recorded two RBI apiece, as Steve Luttazi and Hanson added two runs on the afternoon. Zack Zaetta, Skagerlind, MacLean, Nolan Tichy and Jake Given all contributed a run to UMass' total.
Early in the second, Richmond struck first with a three-run homer. The Spiders tacked on another run in the top of the third with a solo home run to left field to make it a 4-0 contest.
At the bottom of the third frame, MacLean sailed the ball out in right field for a two-run long ball to cut the deficit in half, 4-2. Richmond pulled ahead by three runs at 5-2 with another solo shot over the left field fence in the top half of the fourth.
The Minutemen got the bats going in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Luttazi led off with a single to right field, before Hanson cranked a two-run homer to right center field, bringing around Luttazi and getting back within one. With two outs, Given singled to center field and advanced to second on Zaetta's single. Massachusetts took its first lead of the game at 6-5 on a two RBI double down the left field line from Skagerlind.
UMass tallied a run in the fifth as Justin Blumenthal singled up the middle to score Tichy, making it a 7-5 contest. After a scoreless sixth, the Minutemen scored three more runs to take their largest lead. Luttazi took his place on first after being walked, before Hanson hit a double to right center field, advancing Luttazi to third. Luttazi and Hanson added extra bases on the play from a Richmond fielding error by the second baseman, pushing Luttazi across the dish and placing Hanson on third. As Massachusetts led 8-5, a wild pitch allowed Hanson to cross home plate.
Massachusetts' defense held off Richmond for the remainder of the game to secure the 9-5 victory and bring the series to a 1-1 draw with the Spiders.
Max LeBlanc (1-2) earned his first triumph of the season for the Minutemen, allowing no runs, three hits and walking three to go along with a season-high matching four strikeouts in four innings of work. Esteban Rodriguez (2-1) received the loss for Richmond after going 4.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, seven runs, one walk and striking out four.
UMass and Richmond will compete in the series finale on Sunday, April 16, at 12 p.m., at Earl Lorden, as the Minutemen look to clinch the series.
