Recap in a Minute
UMass faced Navy last weekend at Max Bishop Field in Annapolis, Maryland. The Minutemen claimed the three-game series, 2-1, with a doubleheader sweep last Saturday, winning 4-2 and 14-3 in game one and two, respectively. The Midshipmen won game three, 6-4, on Sunday.
In the first game, Will MacLean hit a two-run double in the fifth inning to knot the contest up at 2-2, before Carter Hanson recorded his first long ball of the year, bringing around Chris Pearsons, allowing the Minutemen to come out on top, 4-2. MacLean and Hanson led the team with two RBI apiece, while Nolan Tichy and Pearsons tallied two hits each. Dylan Terwilliger earned his first collegiate win on the mound, with Jackson Harrigan receiving his first save as a Minuteman.
In game two, a four-run third inning put UMass up early, before tacking on two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth extended the lead, 7-0. Navy cut its deficit to four with three runs in the sixth inning, but a three-run seventh inning and four runs scored in the final frame gave Massachusetts the 14-3 victory. Mike Gervasi contributed a team-leading three hits, adding two runs and two RBI. Hanson, Jacob Sloss and Steve Luttazi with two hits apiece, as Sloss led with three RBI and Luttazi contributing two RBI. Hanson had four runs, with Gervasi and MacLean adding two each.
The final game of the series saw the two teams tied, 1-1, after the first, with the Minutemen taking a brief 2-1 lead at the top of the second. Navy picked up two runs in the bottom half of the second, before registering three more in the third to lead 6-2. UMass scored two more runs in the fifth, but it was not enough, falling 6-4. Luttazi tallied a team best three hits, including his first home run of the year, as Zack Zaetta recording a season-best two hits on the day. Gervasi, Hanson and Sloss added a hit each, with Tichy, Gervasi and Luttazi driving in one RBI apiece. Luttazi had a team-high two runs of his own with Zaetta and Sloss also touching the plate.
All-Time vs. UNC Asheville
The Minutemen and Bulldogs will meet for the first time in program history.
Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2023 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 140th season. Twenty-one members of the team are back from the 2022 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including nine freshman, one sophomore and four transfers.
Commonwealth Connections
Massachusetts head coach Matt Reynolds and UNC Asheville head coach Scott Friedholm spent two seasons together as assistant coaches at Navy from 2008-10.
Keeping it in the Family
The 2023 season marks the 57th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Sixth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).
This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
On Deck
The Minutemen head over to Boiling Springs, N.C., for a midweek matchup with Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, March 15. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+ at 5 p.m. at Bill Masters Field.
