Baseball Falls, 13-2, In Game One At UNC Asheville

Minutemen and Bulldogs set for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 11, to finish out the series.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell to UNC Asheville, 13-2, in game one of the three game series at Greenwood Baseball Field on Friday afternoon. UMass moves to 2-2 on the season, while UNC Asheville improves to 9-4 on the year.
 
Nine Minutemen recorded a hit, as Nolan Tichy and Sam Hill registered one double each and Ryan Coleman had the solo home run in the contest. Steve Luttazi and Coleman came across the plate for Massachusetts, as Coleman and Carter Hanson tallied one RBI apiece.
 
The two teams remained scoreless through the first and the top of the second, before a five-run bottom of the second helped UNC Asheville take an early lead. The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the fourth to make it a 6-0 game.
 
After a scoreless fifth inning, UMass got on the board in the top of the sixth. A two-out single from Luttazi, led the way for Jacob Sloss to hit a single up the middle, advancing Luttazi to second. Hanson knocked in Luttazi with his own single up the middle, bringing the score to 6-1, with UNC Asheville still leading.
 
In the bottom half of the sixth, the Bulldogs struck again, adding four runs, before scoring three more in the seventh. Coleman opened the ninth with his first long ball of the season, giving Massachusetts another run. Hill and Kevin Skagerlind got on base off a double and a walk, respectively, but UNC Asheville recorded its final two outs of the inning, as the game ended with its final score of 13-2.
 
Dylan Terwilliger (1-1) took the loss for the Minutemen, allowing five runs on six hits, walking two and striking out two in two innings pitched. For UNC Asheville, Clay Edmondson (4-0) earned the win, going seven complete innings, giving up one run on seven hits, walking one and dealing seven strikeouts.
 
UMass sets for a double-header with UNC Asheville to finish out game two and three of the series on Saturday, March 11. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+, with the series finale immediately following the conclusion of game two.
