March 05, 2023 | Baseball
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped a 6-4 decision in the series finale with Navy on Sunday afternoon at Max Bishop Field. UMass moved to 2-1 on the season, while Navy improved to 4-7 overall.
Steve Luttazi tallied a team best three hits, including his first long ball of the year, as Zack Zaetta registered a season-best two hits on the day. Mike Gervasi, Carter Hanson and Jacob Sloss added on hit each. Nolan Tichy, Gervasi and Luttazi drove in one run apiece, as Luttazi had a team-high two runs of his own with Zaetta and Sloss also touching the plate.
An RBI double from Gervasi in the opening frame put the Minutemen on the board first, bringing Zaetta home. In the bottom half of the first, a sac fly for Navy knotted the game up at 1-1. With one out in the top of the second, Luttazi homered to right field to give UMass a 2-1 lead, but a two-run single for the Midshipmen put them back on top at 3-2 in the bottom of the second inning.
Navy tacked on three more runs in the third to make it a 6-2 contest. After a scoreless fourth, Massachusetts got the bats going again in the fifth, as back-to-back singles allowed Luttazi and Sloss to sit at second and first, respectively. Ryan Coleman stepped up to the plate, recording a sacrifice bunt, and advancing to second on a throwing error, giving Luttazi the go-ahead to cross the dish and cut the deficit in half. The Minutemen got back within two at 6-4, as a sac fly from Tichy helped Sloss score.
Both UMass and Navy defenses were able to get out of the remaining three and a half innings with no damage, the Midshipmen were able to come away with the 6-4 win.
Tyler Dalton (0-1) pitched two complete innings, allowing six runs on five hits and walking one, receiving the loss. Jack Pawloski took over on the mound for UMass, pitching four innings and giving up one hit with three strikeouts dealt. Zack Given and Charlie Devin each threw an inning, as well, for the Minutemen. Thomas Russell (1-1) earned the win for Navy, allowing only four runs on five hits, with one walk and striking out five. Landon Kruer registered the save with one strikeout and a walk in his one inning outing.
