April 01, 2023 | Baseball
Perrett retires 13 straight and strikes out a season-high five batters.
Zack Zaetta and Steve Luttazi led the team with two hits apiece, while Luttazi added two RBI to his stats sheet. Nolan Tichy, Carter Hanson, Michael Toth and Kevin Skagerlind registered one hit each on the day. Zaetta, Hanson, Chris Pearsons and Toth all had one RBI each, as six different Minutemen contributed a run to UMass' total.
Taylor Perrett started on the mound for Massachusetts, tossing 6.2 innings, while allowing five runs, six hits and dealing a season best five strikeouts. Perrett retired 13 batters, including back-to-back-to-back three up, three down innings.
After Saint Louis scored on a RBI single in the first inning, grabbing an early 1-0 lead, UMass got the bats going in the second to claim a 3-1 lead. Luttazi led off with a single through the left side before Hanson hit a single of his own through the left side. A sacrifice bunt from Jacob Sloss put Luttazi and Hanson on third and second base, respectively. Pearsons stepped up to the plate, grounding out to the third baseman, allowing Luttazi score and bring the game to a 1-1 draw. Toth knocked in Hanson with a single to left field, as UMass took a 2-1 lead. Skagerlind reached first on a fielding error by the Billiken's shortstop, advancing Toth to second. Massachusetts plated its third run of the inning with a RBI single from Zaetta, allowing Toth to score unearned.
The UMass defense held off the Saint Louis in the bottom of the second, the third and the fourth frame to maintain its lead, with Perrett retiring nine straight batters. Skagerlind started off the fifth with a walk, before stealing second. Zaetta was walked and Will MacLean reached after being hit by a pitch. A wild pitch advanced MacLean to second and Zaetta to third, but Skagerlind was caught stealing home on the play. Another walk place Tichy on first to load up the bases. A two-run single from Luttazi saw Zaetta and MacLean cross the dish, and advance Tichy to third, making it a 5-1 contest. Tichy plated the final run of the inning, giving UMass a 6-1 lead, as Hanson reached first on a fielder's choice and Luttazi was out at second.
The Billikens got back within one, scoring four runs in the seventh inning, as the Minutemen held on to a 6-5 lead. UMass held off Saint Louis in the eighth, but SLU tied up the game on an RBI single, before a walk-off RBI single gave the Billikens the 7-6 edge.
Jackson Harrigan (0-2) took the loss for Massachusetts, giving up two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out one in one complete inning. Ben Cherico (2-1) picked up the winning decision for Saint Louis, allowing only two hits and dealing one strikeout in 1.2 innings of work.
