Massachusetts Baseball Drops Series Finale, 14-2, To Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped the series finale to Wichita State University, 14-2, on Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium.

Zack Zaetta led the team with two hits, a run and an RBI. Mike Gervasi, Nolan Tichy and Sam Hill recorded one hit apiece, while Gervasi added an RBI and Tichy tallied a run.

Zaetta singled for the Minutemen to open the contest, before Kevin Skagerlind reached first on an error, advancing Zaetta to second. With one out, Gervasi stepped up to the plate, hitting a single through the left side to drive in Zaetta, as Massachusetts took an early 1-0 lead. UMass maintained its lead through the second and third inning, but a three-run fourth for Wichita State allowed the Shockers to claim a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Tichy singled, before another single from Hill advanced Tichy to second. Zaetta had a single of his own, bringing Tichy around to score and close the gap to one, with the Shockers still leading 3-2. Wichita State tallied two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth, pushing ahead 5-2.

Wichita State plated nine runs in the sixth to conclude the contest with its final score of 14-2.

Dylan Terwilliger (1-3) took the loss for UMass, allowing five runs on four hits, walking two and striking out one in 1.2 innings. Jace Miner (1-0) earned the win for Wichita State, pitching 1.2 innings and dealing three strikeouts.

Massachusetts returns to Earl Lorden Field in Amherst, Mass., on Tuesday, March 28, for its home opener against UAlbany. The game is slated for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
