Massachusetts Baseball Falls At UConn, 7-3

STORRS, Conn. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell, 7-3, to the University of Connecticut on Wednesday afternoon at Elliot Ballpark. Graduate student Steve Luttazi recorded a career-high three doubles, going for 3-for-4 on the day to lead the Minutemen.
Additionally, Luttazi added a team best two runs and a RBI. Zack Zaetta registered two hits and a RBI, while Nolan Tichy and Will MacLean tallied one hit apiece. Tichy also had a RBI and a run.
UConn took an early 1-0 lead in the first with a RBI double to right field. The Minutemen held the Huskies to one run with a pop up to Sam Hill to get out of a bases loaded jam. A solo homer for UConn in third inning extended its lead to 2-0. In the fourth, the Huskies added three runs to their total. UConn scored a run on a single, before a two-RBI single made it a 5-0 contest.
Luttazi started off the fifth frame with a double to right center field. With two outs, Jake Given walked, before Zaetta singled to right field, knocking in Luttazi to give UMass its first run of the day. UConn notched another run in the bottom of the fifth off a RBI single to push ahead 6-1.
With two outs in the sixth, Tichy doubled to right center field to get in scoring position. Luttazi then hit a double of his own, marking his third of the day, to drive in Tichy, to make it a 6-2 game, with UConn still holding the lead. Jacob Sloss hit the ball high, but an error by the Huskies' center fielder placed Sloss on first, sending Luttazi home for an unearned run to cut the deficit in half, 6-3.
One more run for the Huskies in the seventh frame brought the game to its final score of 7-3.
Jackson Harrigan (0-1) received the loss for Massachusetts, giving up one run on one hit and walking one in one inning. Garrett Coe (2-0) earned the win for UConn, pitching four complete innings, allowing only two hits, and striking out four.
Massachusetts hits the road for a three-game series against Wichita State on Friday, March 24, through Sunday, March 25, in Wichita, Kansas. Friday's contest will begin at 1 p.m., while Saturday's first pitch is slated for 3 p.m. Sunday's game will start at 2 p.m. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
