March 17, 2023 | Baseball
LeBlanc, Pawloski and Harrigan combined for a shutout performance.
PHILADELPHIA – Mike Gervasi used a solo home run in the sixth to provide all the offense the University of Massachusetts baseball team would need as UMass collected a 1-0 victory over University of Pennsylvania on Friday afternoon at Tommy Lasorda Field. The Minutemen improve to 3-5 on the season, while Penn drops to 6-7 on the year.
Gervasi went 2-for-3 on the day to lead the team, adding a RBI. Carter Hanson and Chris Pearsons contributed a hit for the Minutemen, while Hanson recorded a stolen base.
After five scoreless innings, Massachusetts struck first on a solo long ball from Gervasi in the sixth inning. Both teams advanced a runner to second throughout the first five frames but were not able to drive in a run. With two outs in the sixth, Gervasi stepped up to the plate cranking a shot over the center field fence for his first homer of the season.
The Minutemen's defense was able to hold off Penn's offense in the final three and a half innings to come out on top, 1-0.
Jack Pawloski (1-0) recorded the win for UMass, while Jackson Harrigan earned his second save of the season. Max LeBlanc started on the mound for Massachusetts, as the three Minutemen combined for the shutout.
