UMass' Rally Comes Up Short At Monmouth, 74-62

The Minutewomen trailed by as many as 18 points in the second quarter before taking their first lead midway through the fourth.

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team stormed back from down by as many as 18 to take the lead in the fourth quarter but came up short to Monmouth 74-62 on Sunday afternoon. The Minutewomen (1-4 Overall) trailed by 31-13 with 6:40 to go in the second quarter before chipping away to eventually take a 56-54 lead with 5:45 to go.
 
Stefanie Kulesza scored a career-high 19 points and added four boards for the Minutewomen while Bre Bellamy chipped in 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go along with seven rebounds.
 
Tori Hyduke and Bellamy put in consecutive buckets early for the Minutewomen before the Hawks went on a 14-0 run to take a 18-4 lead with just under three minutes to go in the first quarter. Monmouth led 24-11 after the opening 10 minutes, shooting 47-percent from the field and 4-of-8 from 3-point range.
 
UMass forced Monmouth into 10 turnovers in the second quarter to bring the Hawks to 16 turnovers at the halftime break and finished the day with 26 turnovers. The Minutewomen held the Hawks without a point for the final 2:33 of the quarter to get within 11 at 36-25 heading into the third quarter.
 
The Minutewomen used a 9-0 run capped off by a pair of Kulesza jumpers to make it a 43-38 game with 5:29 to go in the third. Kulesza scored eight of her points in the quarter as the Minutewomen outscored the Hawks 23-16 while shooting 61-percent from the field.
 
UMass pulled within three points at 54-51 early in the fourth quarter on a Bellamy triple, just the second UMass three of the afternoon. Lilly Taulelei scored a career-high eight points, including a bucket to bring UMass within one moments after Bellamy's three. Jermany Mapp gave UMass its first lead of the day at 56-54 with 5:45 to play while defensively, the Minutewomen held the Hawks to a 1-of-9 start in the final 10 minutes of play.
 
The Hawks followed by converting on four straight field goal attempts to go up by seven at 69-62 with 1:14 left and closed out the afternoon on a 9-0 run to bring it to a 74-62 final.
