Women's Soccer Concludes Regular Season Against Saint Joseph's, At Fordham

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer hosts Saint Joseph's on Thursday, October 19, at Rudd Field for its final regular season home contest, before visiting Fordham on Sunday, October 22 for the regular season finale. Thursday's contest is set for a 3 p.m. start, while Sunday's will begin at 1:30 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
Last Time Out
UMass sits at 7-4-4 overall record, including 4-2-2 in the Atlantic 10, after falling to Saint Louis last Thursday, 6-0.
Defending Fort Rudd
With a 5-0-1 record at home, it is the first time the program has been undefeated following Rudd Field's opening in the fall of 2002, including ties, since both the 2021 and 2008 seasons, when the team won six straight.
Keeping Track
Graduate student defender Fiona Kane become the program's all-time leader in career games started on Sunday against St. Bonaventure (10/8) with 85 games started. She also became the all-time leader in career games played with 86 on Thursday at Saint Louis (10/12)
Kane became the all-time minutes leader, currently accumulating 7,775. She surpassed Danielle Dion (1994-97), who tallied 6,913 minutes of playing time and Briana Scurry (1990-93), who totaled 6,073 minutes over her career.
Senior goalkeeper Bella Mendoza etched her name in the record books after tallying 193 career saves to claim ninth place in the program, surpassing Carla DeSantis (1985-88) with 184 saves. With three more saves, the senior will tie for eighth with Lauren Luckey (2006-10), with 196.
Mendoza also is three shutouts away from tying for 10th in the program alongside Tammie Easton (1982) with 12. The San Ramon, California, native, has recorded nine career shutouts, garnering a career-high in a single season of six this year.
Statistically Speaking
The Minutewomen currently sit fifth in the A-10 standings, with Saint Louis taking the top spot, followed by La Salle, Dayton and Saint Joseph's. UMass is fourth in points with 66, while also placing fourth in goals (22) and in assists (22). Massachusetts has also allowed the second fewest number of goals this season, along with VCU and Saint Joseph's, only letting in 15 by its opponents.
Junior midfielder Bella Recinos leads the team in points (15), goals (five) and assists (five). She is currently tied for third in points in the conference, while tying for fifth in goals and placing third in assists. Junior forward Ashley Lamond follows with the second-most points on the team with 12, while sitting atop the leaderboard with Recinos in goals with five and tying for third in assists with two. In the league, she is also tied for fifth with her goals total.
Recinos also leads the team in game-winning goals with two and is tied for third in the league.
Mendoza tallied 1,265 minutes in net for the Minutewomen, averaging a 1.07 goals-against-average (GAA) and a .810 save percentage. She has also accumulated six shutouts, combining for one on the year.
Mendoza has placed herself in the conference rankings, sitting fifth in goals-against-average with a 1.07. She also ranks sixth with a .864 save percentage and is seventh in total saves with 64. She is also tied for third in shutouts per game with a .400 average and with her six total shutouts.
Scouting Saint Joseph's
The Minutewomen hold a 16-6-1 advantage over the Hawks in the all-time series. The two programs first me on September 28, 1996, as UMass went on to shutout SJU, 4-0, on the day. Massachusetts and Saint Joseph's met last season on the road, resulting in a 1-1 draw.
Saint Joseph's has a 4-6-6 overall record and a 4-1-3 record in league competition, with its A-10 wins coming at Richmond (3-2), at George Washington (3-1), against George Mason (2-0) and at Fordham (2-1). The Hawks lone conference loss came to La Salle, 2-0.
Natalee Vicari leads Saint Joseph's in points with seven, followed by Nicole Everard and Emily Hanrahan with six apiece. Hanrahan sits atop the leaderboard with three goals, while Everard has a team-leading four assists. Vicari registered a team-best 23 shots, with 13 on goal. Katie Cappelletti has played in all 16 games for the Hawks, tallying with 1,440 minutes and recording five solo shutouts. Cappelletti averages a 1.19 GAA and a .800 save percentage, stopping 76 shots.
Scouting Fordham
The Minutewomen lead the all-time series over the Rams, 18-6-1. The first meeting for UMass and Fordham occurred on October 22, 1995, with the Minutewomen coming out on top, 7-0. The two teams met last season at Rudd Field, with Fordham edging out Massachusetts, 1-0, on the day.
Fordham holds a 4-8-4 overall record, including a 2-3-3 A-10 record, earning its only two league wins against George Mason (4-2) and Davidson (1-0).
Caroline Monahan recorded a team-leading 10 points, with a team-best five goals. Lena Johnsen follows close behind with nine points on three goals and three assists, tying for the most with Sari Frankl. Monahan owns a team-high 38 shots, placing 21 shots on target. Kyla King and Serena Mensah have split time in net for the Rams, as King has totaled 753 minutes with a 3-3-1 record, while Mensah tallied 688 minutes with a 1-4-2 record. King registered a 1.32 GAA and a .694 save percentage, stopping 25 shots, as Mensah holds a 1.96 GAA and a .717 save percentage turning aside 38 shots. King has recorded three solo shutouts and Mensah has two shutouts on the year.
Weekly Honors
Kane collected the first Atlantic 10 weekly accolade of the year for the Minutewomen on September 5. She earned A-10 Defensive Player of the Week after playing a key role for UMass' defense to post back-to-back 2-0 shutouts over Syracuse (8/31) and Bryant (9/3). Kane combined for 176 total minutes, playing the full 90 minutes against Syracuse and 86 minutes against Bryant.
Mendoza garnered the second A-10 weekly award, earning A-10 Defensive Player of the Week on September 25. She tabbed the accolade after recording two complete shutouts after defeating VCU, 1-0, and Davidson, 5-0. Playing 180 minutes in net, Mendoza allowed no goals and had a perfect save percentage to earn her fourth and fifth shutouts of the season. She turned aside 13 total saves, including a season-best seven against VCU.
Recinos tabbed the third A-10 weekly award for the Minutewomen on October 2 after being named the A-10 Offensive Player of the Week. The accolade marked the first of her career and accumulated 149 minutes of playing time, while registering two goals and two assists for a total of six points. She scored the lone goal at Duquesne (9/28) for two points. Against Loyola Chicago (10/1) she notched the game-winning goal, and added two assists, matching a career-high, on the day for four total points. Recinos also recorded four shots, placing three on goal, on the week.
Looking Ahead
Massachusetts gears up for the Atlantic 10 Championship, with the quarterfinals round beginning on Friday, October 27 or Saturday, October 28 at the on-campus locations of the top four teams in the final standings. The semifinals are set for Wednesday, November 1 with the finals on Sunday, November 5 at a location to be determined.
