Minutemen and River Hawks Draw, 1-1

LOWELL, Mass. – Andrew Ortiz scored off a Nick Zielonka assist in the 65th minute to help the Minutemen tie UMass Lowell 1-1 on Tuesday night. UMass goes to 6-4-5 while the River Hawks move to 2-8-3. The two teams played to a tie for the second straight year and have an all-time series record of 2-2-2.
The Minutemen and River Hawks both came out of the gate hot. In just the first minute of play, UMass Lowell recorded two shots, one on goal, as well as a corner kick but came up empty. Not too long after, UMass had three shots of their own and took three straight corner kicks in the 9th and 10th minutes.
UMass stayed aggressive throughout the first half, taking six corners and eight shots. Of those eight shots however, only one was on target.
In the second half, Andrew Ortiz was finally able to capitalize on a scoring opportunity. Ortiz and Nick Zielonka executed a perfect give-and-go that put the Minutemen on top in the 65th minute. The goal marks the third year in a row that Ortiz has scored against the River Hawks and Zielonka added to his conference leading assists total.
UMass only held the lead for just 12 minutes when Josh Ofosu scored to tie the game in the 77th minute.
Looking to retake the lead, Bryant Keeney and Ortiz took a trio of shots in 20 seconds but couldn't find the back of the net.
In his first start as a Minuteman, Junior goalkeeper Lance McGrane made six saves in 90 minutes of play while Loucas Costeas made four saves for the River Hawks.
The Minutemen took 11 corners to the River Hawks three and outshot UMass Lowell 18-13. The River Hawks however put more shots on goal with a 7-5 advantage.
The Minutemen return to Rudd Field on Saturday for Senior Day and a conference matchup with Davidson at 1 p.m. They finish out the regular season the following weekend as they travel to Dayton for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, October 28th.
