Minutemen Fight To 1-1 Draw Against Fordham

Nick Zielonka's 75th minute Olimpico tied the game at 1-1.
AMHERST, Mass. – Nick Zielonka's 75th minute goal helped the Minutemen earn a 1-1 draw against Fordham on Saturday afternoon. UMass moves to 6-4-4 while the Rams go to 6-2-5. Both teams are currently 3-2-1 in Atlantic 10 play.
The Rams were able to get on the board early off of a corner kick. Florian Deletioglu headed one in off the assist from Kai Griese in the 7th minute. The tally came on the first shot on goal by either team.
After giving up three shots and going down 1-0 in the first seven minutes, the Minuteman defense stood their ground for the remainder of the half, allowing three shots, one on goal, in the last 38 minutes.
Coming out of the break, UMass produced multiple scoring opportunities. Nick Zielonka nearly tied the game in the 50th minute as he rang the crossbar on a left footed shot.
Matt Zambetti did his part to keep the Minutemen within one by making a diving save to keep Deletioglu from increasing the Fordham lead in the 51st minute.
In the 60th minute, Alec Hughes had a header hit the top woodwork as well but the Rams still held the lead after 60 minutes.
Just over a minute after subbing back into the game, Nick Zielonka scored an Olimpico goal. His corner kick hit off the right post and went in to tie the game at one a piece in the 75th minute.
The Minutemen finished with a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks and outshot Fordham 15-12. Zambetti made a pair of saves while Fordham's Carter Abbott had three. Zielonka led the UMass offense with five shots and goal in 57 minutes of play.
The Minutemen are back at it on Tuesday when they head to Lowell to take on the River Hawks in a battle for the Kennedy Cup at 7 p.m. They return to Rudd Field next Saturday for Senior Day and a conference matchup with Davidson.
