WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD WINS ATLANTIC 10 TITLE!!

The Minutewomen clinched their third outdoor crown and first since 2001 in the final event of the day on Sunday.
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Massachusetts women's track and field trailed VCU by 6.5 points with one event remaining and the Minutewomen collected two medals and a total of 16 points in heptathlon to clinch its third Outdoor Atlantic 10 Championship in program history and first since 2001. UMass led the 14-team field with a score of 123.5, while the host Rams finished with 120 points and Dayton rounded out the top three with a score of 96.5.
Kira Kopec won the heptathlon 800 meter run in 2:23.62 for 775 points to help secure her silver medal with a final score of 5,058. She opened day two of competition by finishing as the runner-up in 200 meter dash (25.21, 859 points) and also placed second in javelin (103'11", 508 points). Elizabeth Lodge earned bronze, posting a No. 3 all-time mark in the UMass record book with 4,856 points. Her best performance on day two came in long jump where she claimed second with a leap of 18 feet, 2.25 inches for 712 points. Katelyn Gorgenyi was UMass' third scorer in the event, placing seventh with 4,306 points.
Lillian Kirry won her first career A-10 gold, taking first in 400 meter hurdles in 1 minute, 0.21 seconds. Alexandra Gonet picked up points for UMass in the event as well, taking seventh in 1 minute, 6.38 seconds.
In her final Atlantic 10 meet, fifth-year Danielle Notarfrancesco picked up her first career conference title, throwing a season-best 48 feet, 8.75 inches for gold in shot put. Gabriella Pagnini claimed eighth with a toss of 39 feet, 11.25 inches.
Gorgenyi captured bronze in 100 meter hurdles, clocking in at 14.11 seconds, Faith Richardson was fifth in 100 meter dash (12.10) and Samantha Schwers placed seventh in the 800 meter run.
Also picking up points for the Minutewomen, Emily McDonald was eighth in triple jump with a mark of 37 feet, 8.75 inches and Cheyenne Figueroa landed eighth in discus with a throw of 136 feet, 6 inches.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Daniella Pierre, Elizabeth Hoenes, Sadai Headley-Mawasi and Kirry combined to run 3:50.57 for bronze, picking up crucial points to keep UMass within striking distance of VCU with just the heptathlon left to score. The Minutewomen's 4x100 squad of Grace Poku, Kirry, Caroline Schissel and Richardson was fifth in 48.15 and the 4x800 team took fifth as well in 9 minutes, 20.73 seconds.
For leading the Minutewomen to the title, Christine Engel was named the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Women's Track & Field Coach of the Year for the first time in her career, the third time a UMass coach has taken home the award.
The Minutewomen will be back in action next weekend, May 13-14, at the New England Championships at Bryant in Smithfield, Rhode Island.
