Baseball Falters To VCU, 26-2

Minutemen and Rams prepare for game two of the series on Saturday, May 14, at 1 p.m on ESPN+.

AMHERST, Mass. – A 12-run first inning for the Virginia Commonwealth University allowed an early jump over the University of Massachusetts baseball team, as the Minutemen fell, 26-2, against the Rams on Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.
 
UMass moves to 20-22-1 overall and 7-12 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while VCU improves to 30-18 overall on the season, including a league record of 14-5.
 
Cole Hebble tallied a team best two hits, including a double, while four other Minutemen record hits. Nolan Tichy recorded a double, as him and Hebble scored UMass' runs. Collin Shapiro and Steve Luttazi knocked in one run apiece.
 
VCU collected 12 runs in the first inning, before adding one in the second and four more in the top of the third to make it a 17-0 contest. After a double from Tichy in the bottom of the third, Shapiro hit a single through the left side to bring Tichy across the dish to get Massachusetts on the board.
 
The Rams scored another run in the fifth and six more in the top of the sixth, bringing the score to 24-1. In the bottom half of the sixth, a double from Hebble put him into scoring position, before a single from Drew DeMartino advanced Hebble to third. Luttazi recorded a sacrifice fly, sending Hebble home, making it a 24-2 game.
 
VCU totaled two more runs, scoring one in both the eighth and ninth frames extending its lead to the final score of 26-2.
 
Kevin Dow (6-4) got the loss for UMass, throwing 0.1 innings and giving up eight runs on six hits. Campbell Ellis (3-4) secured the victory for VCU, allowing one run, three hits, walking one and striking out five in five complete innings of work.
 
The Minutemen and Rams prepare for game two of the series on Saturday, May 14, at 1 p.m., at Earl Lorden Field. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
