George Washington Takes Game Two From Baseball, 8-2, To Tie Up Series

ARLINGTON, Va. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped game two of the regular season series finale to George Washington University, 8-2, on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park. Graduate student Zach Clevenger and senior Tucker Wittman both recorded season-highs in strikeouts, with five and four, respectively.
UMass fell to 22-25-1 overall on the season and 8-15 in the Atlantic 10, while George Washington improved to 21-30 overall and 9-14 in conference play.
Collin Shapiro and Drew DeMartino sat atop the leaderboard with two hits, including a double from Shapiro, and one RBI apiece. Kevin Skagerlind and Steve Luttazi registered a hit each, while Shapiro and Aidan Wilde scored the two runs for the Minutemen. Wittman contributed a season-high four strikeouts through 2.1 innings pitched.
George Washington got on the board first in the second, before a two-out double down the left field line by Shapiro brought Wilde to the plate to tie the game up at 1-1 in the third.
The Colonials hit an RBI single to reclaim a 2-1 lead, but UMass brought the game to a 2-2 draw in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, DeMartino drove in Shapiro on a single to left field. In the bottom half of the sixth, George Washington tallied six runs to take an 8-2 lead, which the Colonials held on to for the remainder of the contest.
Zach Clevenger (1-4) took the loss for the UMass on the mound, despite dealing a season best five strikeouts. Clevenger gave up five runs on 10 hits in five complete innings of work. Harrison Cohen (7-7) picked up the victory for George Washington, throwing seven complete innings, and allowing only two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out four.
