Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball team completes the 2022 regular season with a trip to Arlington, Virginia, to take on George Washington University on Thursday, May 19, through Saturday, May 21, in a crucial Atlantic 10 three-game series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Thursday, before a 1 p.m. start on Friday. The series finale is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
The Minutemen are currently 21-24-1 overall on the season and 7-14 in the A-10 Conference, while George Washington holds a 20-29 overall record, including an 8-13 record in the league. The Colonials are coming off an 0-3 sweep at George Mason in the A-10 series last weekend.
Recap in a Minute
Mike Gervasi's two-out single to right center field drove in Kevin Skagerlind in the bottom of the 10th aided the Minutemen to 4-3 walk-off victory over Quinnipiac on Tuesday afternoon.
Gervasi led the team with three hits, two RBIs and two walks, and added a run to his stat sheet. Will MacLean recorded two hits, and also tallied both a run and a walk himself. Skagerlind, Drew DeMartino and Collin Shapiro all contributed a hit, while Shapiro and Dylan Judd knocked in one run apiece.
Blake Bennett (2-0) earned the win on the mound for UMass, pitching one complete inning, and only allowing a hit, two walks and striking out one.
All-Time vs. George Washington
The Minutemen and Colonials will meet for the 55th time in program history, since their first meeting on April 18, 1980, where UMass won 13-4 on the day at a neutral site in Hershey, Pennsylvania, at the EAA Tournament. George Washington took down Massachusetts, 4-2, in the two programs last meeting on April 14, 2019. Despite the loss, the Minutemen improved to 30-24 in the all-time series, winning the first two contests of that weekend series with the Colonials.
Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2022 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 139th season. Twenty-seven members of the team are back from the 2021 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including five freshman and three transfers.
It's Going, Going, and It's Gone
The Minutemen have tallied 36 homeruns in 46 games, from 10 Minutemen, including a season-high four homers on the road at Fairfield on May 3. DeMartino leads the team with eight, followed by MacLean, Gervasi and Aidan Wilde with five. Cole Hebble, and Steve Luttazi tallied four each, while Nolan Tichy has two, and Judd, Skagerlind and Shapiro also have one home run apiece.
Luttazi had a stellar first game with two home runs including a grand slam, before earning one in game three at Fairleigh Dickinson and one against Sacred Heart, while DeMartino recorded a two-run homer in game one at Fairleigh Dickinson, before adding solo home runs in both game two at Fairleigh Dickinson and the second game at Towson. DeMartino added two long balls in game one versus Saint Joseph's, as well, before posting a two-run shot in game two vs. Fordham and a solo homer in the second contest at Rhode Island.
Hebble, MacLean and Gervasi contributed two-run shots all in the Fairfield contest.
[Multi]ple Games
UMass has a strong showing with multi-hit games, as the Minutemen have run their total of multi-hit performances to 117. Hebble leads with a production of 23, which included two five-plus hit contests, Skagerlind and Gervasi have 15 each, as Judd follows with 11. Tichy, DeMartino and MacLean tallied 10 multi-hit contests, while Luttazi has eight. Jacob Sloss (5), Wilde (4), Shapiro (3) and Chris Pearsons (1), Carter Hanson (1) and Michael Rounds (1) all contributed to UMass' multi-hit total.
Massachusetts has also contributed a total of 65 multi-RBI games, led by Gervasi with 11, including nine two-run contests, one three-RBI and one four-RBI games, and Judd and MacLean with nine. DeMartino has contributed eight, with DeMartino bringing in five-plus runs one time. Tichy, Hebble and Luttazi have totaled five, with Skagerlind and Sloss both having four, and Wilde with three multi-RBI games.
On A Roll…
The Minutemen have seven that are riding a current hitting streak, so far this season. Pearsons sits atop the leaderboard with a streak of two, while MacLean, Skagerlind, Shapiro, Gervasi, DeMartino and Hanson all have one apiece. MacLean had the longest streak with 12, followed by Skagerlind and Shapiro with 11, with Hebble close behind with 10, before it came to an end.
Hebble is on a current nine-game reached base streak, as DeMartino has four, followed by Skagerlind and Pearson with three and two, respectively. Shapiro, MacLean, Gervasi and Hanson have reached base in one contest apiece. Tichy had the longest streak at 21, with DeMartino, Hebble and Skagerlind all following behind, reaching base 18 times, but those streaks came to end.
Keeping it in the Family
The 2022 season marks the 56th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Fifth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).
This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
