Greene blasts a two-run homer in the ninth inning, but Minutemen fall in series finale
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball battled in the ninth inning but was unable to overcome an early jump by George Washington as the Minutemen fell, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. The result left the Maroon and White just short of a three-game sweep after the squad claimed the first two matchups of the weekend.
UMass was held to just four hits by the GW pitching staff and was unable to break into that column until the fifth inning, adding three more in the ninth.
The Colonials were first to the scoreboard in the third on the strength of a three-run homer off the bat of Colin Brophy. GW would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Anthony Frechette popped a single into left field that scored pinch runner Cade Fergus from second base.
Massachusetts worked to rally in its last at bat but ultimately stranded the tying run at first base. Redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto drew a leadoff walk before senior Logan Greene worked the count full and hammered his second home run of the season. From there, redshirt sophomore Connor Smith and senior Alec Norton contributed one-out singles to continue the threat, but a strikeout and groundout followed to bring the ballgame to an end.
GW's Nate Woods dealt 5.2 innings of one-hit, shutout ball and struck out four against just one walk for the win (2-0). Sophomore Sean Harney (2-3) took the loss for the Minutemen despite a seven-inning start, scattering four hits and striking out two while responsible for three runs. The save went to Tyler Hix, who started the game in right field but moved to the mound after Greene's home run.
The Minutemen now focus on midweek games against UConn (April 16) at Earl Lorden Field before the Beanpot Championship Game at Fenway Park vs. Harvard (April 17). Tickets for the Beanpot game are $10 and can be purchased online by visiting redsox.com/beanpot or by calling the Boston Red Sox Ticket Office at (877) REDSOX-9.
Net ticket proceeds at the Beanpot will benefit the Pete Frates #3 Fund, named after the former Boston College outfielder and captain who was later diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
