UMass’ Rowland Collects Silver In High Jump On Day One Of New England Championships

Kirry breaks own school record in 400 meter hurdles, one of eight Minutewomen to advance on the track.
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – University of Massachusetts women's track and field picked up a silver medal and saw a school record fall, sending eight Minutewomen to Saturday's finals on the track on day one of the New England Championships. Through seven scored events, UMass sits 11th out of 29 teams with 10.75 points.
Courtney Rowland cleared 5 feet, 5 inches to tie for second in high jump and collect a silver medal. Lily Robinson also provided points for the Maroon & White, taking fourth in the 5,000 meter run in 17 minutes, 16.09 seconds.
Lillian Kirry improved upon her own school record in 400 meter hurdles, winning the preliminaries with a time of 59.72 seconds. Kira Kopec and Sarah Yocum also earned spots in Saturday's final, taking sixth and eighth with times of 1 minute, 2.88 seconds and 1 minute, 3.76 seconds, respectively. Yocum qualified for the 100 meter hurdles final, as well, placing sixth in 14.33 seconds and will be joined by Katelyn Gorgenyi who was seventh with a time of 14.48 seconds.
Sadai Headley-Mawasi ran 57.32 to sixth in prelims to advance to the 400 meter final. Caroline Schissel was seventh in 100 meter prelims, qualifying the final with a time of 12.17 seconds, and Grace Poku moved on to the 200 meter final, running 25.35 seconds to eighth.
Action will resume for the Minutewomen on Saturday, May 13, with heptathlon high jump beginning at 10 a.m.
