Baseball Falls, 18-3, To VCU

Minutemen will recognize 18-man senior roster in ceremony prior to Sunday’s series finale.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped game two, 18-3, to Virginia Commonwealth University of Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.
 
UMass moves to 20-23-1 overall and 7-13 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, as VCU improves to 31-18 overall on the season, including a league record of 15-5.
 
Dylan Judd led the team with two hits, including a double, while six other Minutemen registered one hit. Kevin Skagerlind also recorded a double on the day. Cole Hebble, Carter Hanson and Jacob Sloss scored one run apiece, as Hanson and Steve Luttazi batted in one run each.
 
VCU tallied three runs in both the first and second inning, before doubling its combined total in the third, picking up six runs, to lead 12-0. The Rams added two more in the fourth frame to extend their lead to 14-0, before bringing four more across the plate in the top of the seventh to pull ahead, 18-0.
 
UMass got on the board in the bottom half of the seventh, pushing three across the dish. Sloss singled to right to get on base, before Hebble was hit by a pitch, moving Sloss over to second. Both Sloss and Hebble advanced into scoring position on a passed ball during Hanson's at bat. Hanson finished his at bat with a single, allowing Sloss to touch the plate. VCU's Cade Dressler walked Drew DeMartino to load the bases and walked Luttazi to send Hebble home to make it a 18-2 contest. A passed ball granted Hanson to score for the Minutemen's third run of the afternoon, but the score stood at 18-3, in favor of the Rams, through the final two innings.
 
Scott LeSieur (4-1) took the loss for UMass, after giving up nine runs on 11 hits and walking one in two innings pitched. Maddison Furman (4-0) notched the win for VCU, throwing three complete innings, only allowing two hits, walking one and striking out two.  
 
Massachusetts takes on VCU on Sunday, May 15, for the series finale at 12 p.m. on ESPN+. The Minutemen will recognize their 18-man senior roster in a Senior Day ceremony prior to the first pitch.
