UMass Women’s Track & Field Takes Second At Ocean State Invitational

Sophia Casciano wins pole vault at the meet and ties the third-best outdoor mark in program history.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Massachusetts women's track and field claimed second in the team scoring at the Ocean State Invitational at Brown on Saturday. The Minutewomen posted a score of 160, trailing only Dartmouth (192) in the seven-team field.
 
UMass won five events on the day, including pole vault which saw Sophia Casciano take the top spot in that event by matching the third-best mark in program history, 11 feet, 11.75 inches.
 
In javelin, Anna Cozzolino placed first with a toss of 126 feet, 2 inches and Sara Folan was third (117'3"). Danielle Notarfrancesco was victorious in shot put, throwing 47 feet, 8.5 inches and Gabriella Pagnini took seventh with a mark of 39 feet, 1.25 inches.
 
Jessica Dronzek led a trio of scorers for the Minutewomen in triple jump, winning the event with a jump of 34 feet, 9 inches. Jessica Green (34'6.75") and Casey Conroy (33'1.75") followed in second and sixth, respectively.
 
UMass' 4x400 meter relay earned the top spot with a time of 3 minutes, 53.94 seconds and the team of Caroline Schissel, Abby Collins, Lillian Kirry and Faith Richardson claimed second in the 4x100m, running 47.92 seconds.
 
In hammer throw, Cheyenne Figueroa earned the runner-up spot with a mark of 176 feet, 1 inch and Voski Armenakyan was eighth with her throw of 165 feet, 7 inches. Rounding out the scoring in throws, Pagnini placed third in discus (132'4") and Figueroa was sixth (128'10").
 
Lea Doerries cleared 5 feet 5 inches for second in high jump and Elizabeth Lodge captured fourth at the same height, while Courtney Rowland was seventh with a mark of 5 feet, 1 inch.
 
In long jump Jordan Lafave and Tiarra Deveaux placed fourth and fifth with jumps of 18 feet, 3 inches and 17 feet, 7.5 inches, respectively.
 
Four Minutewomen finished in the top-eight in 100 meter hurdles, led by Sarah Yocum in second with a time of 14.48. Katelyn Gorgenyi ran 14.59 seconds to third and Kira Kopec (14.88) and Kirry (14.94) were seventh and eighth.
 
Kirry also scored in 200 meter dash, claiming fourth in 25.39 seconds and Faith Richardson registered a fifth-place finish in 25.42 seconds.
 
Wrapping up the UMass scorers, Schissel was fifth in 100m dash (12.37), Richardson took sixth (12.43) and Sarah Witt placed eighth in 400m dash (59.92).
 
The Minutewomen return to action next weekend, splitting the squad between the UConn Northeast Challenge on Friday and Saturday, April 15-16 and hosting WPI, Boston University, Harvard and Hartford on Saturday, April 16.
