A-10 Play Resumes With Three-Game Series Against Fordham

Setting the Scene
The University of Massachusetts baseball team welcomes Fordham University to Earl Lorden Field for a three-game Atlantic 10 series on Friday, April 8 through Sunday, April 10. The series will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, before a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. The series finale is set for a 12 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
The Minutemen are 11-9-1 overall on the season, including 2-1 in the A-10 Conference. Fordham holds an overall record of 6-19 with a 1-2 A-10 Conference record. The Rams enter the series coming off a midweek 12-7 loss at Siena and are 0-11 on the road.
Recap in a Minute
UMass secured a spot in the Baseball Beanpot Championships after a 9-5 victory at Harvard in the Opening Round of the tournament on Tuesday afternoon.
Kevin Skagerlind led the team, going 3-for-5, including his first collegiate home run, tallying one run and RBI. Drew DeMartino went 2-for-3, recording a team-high three runs on the day. Dylan Judd and Nolan Tichy registered two RBI, while Tichy had two hits, along with DeMartino, Cole Hebble and Jacob Sloss.
Blake Bennett picked up his first win as a Minutemen, allowing one run on two hits, walking two and striking out three in three complete innings of work. Zach Clevenger came in for two frames prior, dealing three strikeouts, while Jack Pawloski came in in the ninth, giving up one hit.
All-Time vs. Fordham
The Minutemen and Rams will meet for the 65th time in program history, as Fordham holds a 32-31-1 advantage over UMass. The first meeting between the two teams occurred on April 5, 1996. Fordham defeated Massachusetts, 7-5, in nine innings on the day. UMass and Fordham met last season on May 2 to complete a four-game series, as the Rams won 11-1 in eight frames.
Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2022 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 139th season. Twenty-seven members of the team are back from the 2021 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including five freshman and three transfers.
It's Going, Going, and It's Gone
The Minutemen have tallied 19 homeruns in 21 games, from nine Minutemen. DeMartino leads the team with five, followed by Steve Luttazi and Hebble with three. Aidan Wilde and Will MacLean tallied two each, while Tichy, Judd, Mike Gervasi and Skagerlind also have one home run apiece.
Luttazi had a stellar first game with two home runs including a grand slam, before earning one in game three at Fairleigh Dickinson, while DeMartino recorded a two-run homer in game one at Fairleigh Dickinson, before adding solo home runs in both game two at Fairleigh Dickinson and the second game at Towson. DeMartino added two long balls in game one versus Saint Joseph's, as well.
[Multi]ple Games
UMass had a strong showing with multi-hit games, as the Minutemen have a total of 55 multi-hit performances. Hebble leads with a production of 11, which included two five-plus hit contests, and Gervasi has eight, while Skagerlind and DeMartino follow with six, and Judd with five. Tichy and MacLean recorded four apiece, as Sloss and Luttazi totaled three, Wilde with two and Chris Pearsons, Collin Shapiro and Michael Rounds have one.
Massachusetts has also contributed a total of 32 multi-RBI games, led by DeMartino with seven, including five two-run contests, one three-RBI and one- five-plus RBI games. Gervasi has contributed five, bringing in two runs three times, three runs once and four once. Judd has totaled four, while Hebble, Skagerlind and Tichy have three, with Hebble having two three-run games and one five-plus. Skagerlind has also tallied a two-RBI, one three-RBI and a four-RBI contest.
On A Roll…
The Minutemen have 13 that are riding a current hitting streak, so far this season. Skagerlind sits atop the leaderboard on a nine-game hitting streak, followed by Wilde with eight. Sloss and MacLean registered a six-game streak, while Hebble and Judd are on a five-game streak. Luttazi and Gervasi are on a three-game streak, as Pearsons is riding hitting streak of two. DeMartino Tichy, Carter Hanson and Christian Walsh have a current streak of one.
Hebble is also on a 13-game reached base streak, as DeMartino and Skagerlind have nine, followed by Wilde and MacLean with eight and seven games, respectively. Sloss has reached base six times in a row, while Judd, Gervasi, Tichy and Luttazi have reached base five times. Pearsons and Hanson are on a current streak of two, and Walsh has one.
Keeping it in the Family
The 2022 season marks the 56th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Fifth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).
This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.

Massachusetts makes a trip to Brighton, Massachusetts, on Tuesday, April 12, to take on Boston College in the Baseball Beanpot Championship game at 4 p.m.
