April 29, 2022 | Baseball
Minutemen climb back from 7-2 deficit in the seventh and rally from two runs down in the eighth inning.
The victory improves the Minutemen to 19-16-1 overall and 7-6 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while the Patriots fall to 14-26 overall and 6-7 in the league.
Cole Hebble, Kevin Skagerlind, Mike Gervasi and Steve Luttazi all led the way in hits with two apiece, while four other Minutemen registered a hit, which included a double from Hebble and Will MacLean. Hebble recorded two of the team's nine runs to sit atop the leaderboard. Dylan Judd, MacLean and Luttazi totaled two RBIs each, and Skagerlind and Aidan Wilde both batted in one run.
George Mason took an early 6-0 lead after tallying at least one run in the first four frames. The Patriots got on the board first in the first innings after South Trimble stole home. George Mason added two more in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth.
UMass got on the board in the fifth inning, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Skagerlind that brought Collin Shapiro to the dish. In the sixth, an RBI single for George Mason extended its lead to 7-1, but Massachusetts scored one in the bottom of the inning to make it a 7-2 contest.
A two-run single up the middle from Judd got the Minutemen within three in the seventh, as Hebble and Skagerlind crossed the plate. Luttazi contributed a two-run single of his own to left field to close in on the Patriots lead, before Wilde reached first base on a throwing error by George Mason, sending Luttazi to home plate to bring the game to a 7-7 draw.
The Patriots took back the lead in the top of the eighth with one run scored, but a double to left center field from MacLean brought Hebble and Ryan Coleman across the plate to claim the 9-8 triumph.
